TN: Finis, Nickel Syrah, Flora Springs Trilogy

Drank these with friends and family for my 51st birthday.

  • 2008 Vetrere Finis Puglia IGT - Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT (9/24/2009)
Green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is very aromatic. Orange blossoms, tropical fruits, grapefruits, and minerals. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is tight. It was actually better on Day 2. Good citrus notes with minerals. A touch flabby (but then, so am I). Nice finish. 50+4+13+16+6=89 (89 pts.)
  • 2005 Nickel & Nickel Syrah Darien Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (9/24/2009)

Received from the Dyers as a gift. Purple in color, opque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, and black pepper. Full bodied. On the palate, this is quite smooth. Easy to gulp, with no trace of 14.7 Alc. Otoh, it lacks something exciting too. Black raspberries, slightly jammy. A very good wine but I think I am not a huge fan of RRV Syrah. 50+4+12+17+7=90 (90 pts.)

  • 2005 Flora Springs Trilogy - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/24/2009)
$69 Ohio. Ouch except this was given to me as a birthday gift. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cedar, cassis, cherries, cocoa and vanilla. Full bodied. On the palate, this is young and needs air. Nice cassis flavors. A lot of oak, but will probably integrate with some time. Nice fruit. At $70 there are lots of alternatives, but this is very nice. If I owned any, I would decant for a few hours prior to serving. 50+4+13+17+7=91 (91 pts.)

Costco here in town has the Trilogy for $39.99 a bottle. I think, but can’t remember for sure, that I had a bottle of the '05 a few months ago. It might have been an '04, but your note rings a bell.

Trilogy is good stuff, 99 and 02 have been my favorites and I have wanted to try the 05. Trilogy is nice for $35sih, definitely not for $70ish.
