TN: Enkidu Tasting Room visit

ENKIDU TASTING ROOM VISIT - Enkidu Tasting Room, Kenwood, California (6/7/2009)

This is a new tasting room near my sister’s two boutique stores in Kenwood, so I decided to check it out after brunching with my sister. The winemaker, Phil Staehle, learned his trade at Carmenet Vineyards, and also worked briefly at Copain. His wines generally show a good light touch with the oak (except for the Chard, where the thinnish fruit can’t support the excess of new French oak used). The Sauvignon Blanc is very nice. The tasting room was only pouring the lowest priced of the three Pinots, and I’d like to try the rest. The Rhone blend is quite tasty, and a good value, and the 2nd label, “E,” Cabernet was remarkably good for the price.

Richard… what is the price range here?? We’ll be in Kenwood for a week in August.

Bud,

Their prices range from the low $20s ($20 for the Rose, $24 for the “E” Cabernet, $25 for the Humbaba Rhone Blend) to a top price of $45 for one of the single vineyard Pinots.

The winemaker was in town today at a big show put on by Liquor Depot and kindly sign my `07 Diener Ranch P Sirah. Best red in the entire show! The Humbaba was not too shabby either!

I am a big fan of this winery. The Kick Ranch Syrah and Kick Rand Sauv Blanc are both really good wines. They also make a Sangiovese/Petite Sirah blend that is quite delightful as well. Phil is a super nice guy and I wish him much success.
