A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. I hate wines like this. I opened it when I started cooking dinner. I’d take a drink and think: “Damn that’s good”. And then take anuther pour. By the time I sat down to eat, more than half the btl was gone. Danged if I can figure out where it all went to!!
  2. Screwtop: Steve usually btls his whites in a Stelvin closure. I grasped the waist of the btl & started unscrewing. I turned & turned and the entire capsule turned buut refused to come off. I realized I’d stripped the threads on the top. So I had to get out a box cutter (the retractable ones…like they use to hijack airplanes) and carefully cut the top from the collar. Then cut my finger trying to get the screwtop off from the jagged edge. When you open these btls, it’s probably important to grip the collar of the screwcap before twisting off the top. Will practice this technique on anuther btl tonight.

You’re right about the screwcap-removing technique, Tom. I’ve found it much easier to grab the collar of the screwcap and twist the whole thing to break the seal before twisting and removing the cap itself.

I need to get a bottle of that Heart of Gold from Steve. I’ll be helping him bottle his 2013 “Rocks and Gravel” GSM blend this week.

Ken, that’s what I do. Hold the bottle part of the screwcap and twist the bottle with your other hand. The seal cracks and the cap is easy to spin off. Before I saw someone do that I was surprised to find how hard some screwcaps are to twist off. No more.

Weaklings

Careful there David, Tom is pretty handy with his épée

I had a bottle of Steve’s 13 Rose last weekend and it was exceptional. Bright, perfect ripeness and fruit. The warm weekend helped too
