TN: Echezeaux – Grand cru standard?

ECHEZEAUX – GRAND CRU STANDARD? - (11/2/2014)

5 of us gathered on a thursday evening and the theme was Echezeaux.

  • 2007 Agrapart & Fils Champagne L’Avizoise - France, Champagne, Avize, Champagne
Made from two of the estate’s oldest Grand Crus parcels. Dry, powerful and complex. With oxidized apple, apricot and cream. Smooth and soft with some chalk on the long finish. Very fine and sophisticated. (93 pts.)

  • 2012 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Very expressive and quite dominant ripe exotic fruit, overpowering the minerals and acidity on the medium and creamy finish. This is quite exotic for a Ruchottes and needs a little more finesse. (90 pts.)

  • 2011 Arnaud Tessier Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
More vibrant and precise than the Ruchottes, offering tangy scents of citrus and crushed stones. With good tension and length on the finish. (91 pts.)

  • 1961 Luigi Bosca Barolo Riserva Speciale - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Completely gone and undrinkable. NR (flawed)

  • 1967 De Bourran & Cie Nuits St. Georges - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
From a bottle with a fill level about 2½ inches below the cork. A gorgeously complex nose of spice and earth notes. The supple, mature flavors are sweet and on the delicate side. An impressive showing of this old Burg. (93 pts.)

  • 1988 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Aromas of game, coffee and mocha. On the palate firmly tannic, dry and hard to assess. Not at all a feminine style of Echezeaux. (88 pts.)

  • 1999 Jean-Marc Millot Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
From Echezeaux du Dessus, Les Poulailleres & Clos Saint-Denis. A subtle wine not especially complex. Finishing with very fine tannins in a rather gentle style. (91 pts.)

  • 2001 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
From old vines Les Treux and Les Cruots. In a difficult state now with less flavor authority, depth and complexity than I would expect from this cuvee. (90 pts.)

  • 2007 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
From Les rouges du Bas & Les Cruots. Subtly complex with black cherry, dark berry and mineral flavors. Finishing substantial supple and with broad tannins. (92 pts.)

  • 2007 Lucien Le Moine Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
From En Orveaux. Earth, mushroom and cherry fruit aromas. On the palate low in acid style and the sweetly oaky finish displays nice length and rather easygoing tannins. (92 pts.)

  • 2007 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
The best yet of this 2007 group. Shows more flesh and much better extraction than the foregoing wines. Finishing with sweet tannins and very good length. A savory and a very stylish Echezeaux ! (93 pts.)

  • 2008 Domaine Anne Gros Echezeaux Les Loachausses - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
This Echezeaux lifts the palate and stimulates the taste buds with subtle, pure aromas of red fruits and spices. Ending with nice flesh and refined extraction. (93 pts.)

  • 2011 Jean-Marie Fourrier Echezeaux Vieille Vigne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
The bouquet delivers very fine cherries and strawberries. Very pure and sappy on the palate with stylish tannins and refreshing fruit flavors. A gorgeous Echezeaux with the signature of the winemaker. (94 pts.)

  • 2010 Cecile Tremblay Echezeaux du Dessus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
This is a very complex, soil-driven Echezeaux. Showing volume and concentration on the palate with rich purple fruits and nuances of earth on the balanced, powerful and very long finish. This 2010 Cecile Tremblay Echezeaux is a clear stand out. (95 pts.)

The Echezeaux vineyard is one of the lesser grand crus in my view, but a great producer can take this vineyard to a extraordinary standard …

Posted from CellarTracker

Echezeaux id under-rated for mine, absolutely worthy of Grand Cru status in the right hands and Cecile Tremblay is making brilliant wine.

Thanks for the notes Barry.

Cheers
Jeremy

14 bottles for 5 people. Nice Ratio.

DRC doesn’t do badly, either!

Had an '08 Eugenie Ech. on the weekend…was pretty good.

Try also Mugneret-Gibourg and Mongeard-Mugneret

Her wines are very, very special.

so where does JM get his Ech?

Great notes.

I was recently gifted a bottle of 2010 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Echezeaux

I am not familiar with the producer, any thoughts?

This 2011 Jean-Marie Fourrier Echezeaux is a négociant offering vinified from purchased fruit from the Champs Traversin climat in Echezeaux. (source AM)

Who owns Champs Traversin in Echezeaux; Domaine Dujac, Maison Champy, Louis Jadot, Comte Liger-Belair, Domaine Jacques Prieur, Clos Frantin (Bichot), Roblot-Marchand and Anne-Francoise Gros.

Echezeaux is very reliant on the producer to make GC quality juice…another is Charmes-Chambertin. Jayer-Gilles Echezeaux du Dessus has always been one of my favorite Echezeaux. I’m surprised that the Rouget didn’t show better…

Not a huge fan of the last two bottles I had of the '01 Rouget myself, the '02 though is a gem!

………… Yes Mugneret-Gibourg is a high-quality producer!

One of our group had the 2012 Georges Noellat Echezeaux - it was stunning !!!

Not surprising.

Just curious of the cost of each of those bottles, the one I looked up was $400-500…

i have had the 2012 georges noellat also and it is stunning!

i only know that the bottle i brought cecile tremblay 2010 echezeaux was around a 130 euro, so today that would be 163 dollars

Mongeard-Mugeret Echezeauxs should be about $100-150. Mugneret-Gibourg probably $250-350.

Mugneret-Gibourg very hard to source.

To get something good, thinking about trying some Grivot (though I absolutely hate their labels), and/or Tremblay.
