TN: Dynamic Duo, 2014 Ultramarine Rose, 1989 Chateau Lynch Bages

With a colorful tasty salad, shrimp cocktail and rib roast, we had some yum wines. It’s always nice when a couple bottles perform as well or better than you expect. Life is good [cheers.gif]

2014 Ultramarine Rose: A chameleon for a short time last night but tasty all the way. Nice pinkish - salmon color. When initially poured this had a gorgeous intense peachy mango creamy lactone nose. I figured there was likely a touch of sulfur component and mixed with the fruity components give this distinct peach tropical nose. Also figured it would dissipate quickly and it did after 20-25 minutes. Nice while it lasted  Remaining nose and flavors were not disappointing, sour cherry and ripe golden apple with brisk acidity that gets your attention. Very nice tonight, will check again in a couple years.

1989 Chateau Lynch-Bages Bordeaux: Have had several bottles of this over the years but this bottle was the best to date. 30 years old and still drinking young. Dense concentrated cherry, cassis and some blackberry, wet soil, cedar shavings, coffee and a whiff of menthol. Powerful yet graceful and balanced. Don’t think this has entered it’s prime drinking window. Of course that may vary between people and bottles. Delicious now but based on this bottle, years of development left.

89 Lynch Bages is a very special Bordeaux bottling. It is one of the best of the best from Pauillac.

+1 re what Don said

Don, Jon, yeah, the 89 is one of my all time favorite Bordeaux. What totally surprised me was how youthful tasting last nights bottle was. Heck, it tasted younger than my first bottle of 89 Lynch-Bages tasted in 2005!

Tom

Great note on a great bottle.
I’ve had the same experience with youthful bottles of 1989 Lynch Bages.
We still have about a case of this left. One of my all-time favorites.

I don’t own enough, nor drink Lynch Bages frequently enough. Thanks for reminder.
