2000 Dugat Py Gevrey Chambertin Premier Cru

Very black for a Burg, the bouquet was very controlled by the heavy handed oak, it was lovely oak but after 9 years I would be hoping it would be taking more of a back seat, the middle palate was very concentrated and yummy but then the oak reared its ugly head again on the finish. In the end this was very good………. It just felt like a chef who had started with great raw ingredients and then completely over worked them in the kitchen.

2000 Janasse VV CnP

Wow, this had some fireworks going on, ripe and round but what was most impressive was the amount of silky tannins that reigned in the middle palate sweetness. I have had a great deal of pleasure from 2000 CnP’s and this was no slouch either.

2005 Jadot NSG Boudot – Magnum

This was a blast to start our Annual Adelaide Test Match Cricket Lunch; it was followed by Magnums of my Two Worlds and Ares. This started out a little moody and brooding but with some air it kicked straight into gear. I average a few bottles of 2005 Burgs a week and I really lovely there mouth feel and silky texture, the consistently hit the ball out the park for me, I hit the occasional locked down one but 9 out of 10 are a great deal of fun to drink and very rewarding. This magnum had the legs to go the long haul and 3 bottles of this cuvee from 1996 last year were drink outside of their skin. It was great to find an excuse to open a magnum of Burgundy and it was sunk it what felt like record time.

2005 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Charmes

The perfect Sunny afternoon wine, a very Meursault bouquet and super soft palate with loads of fruit and soft acid. I don’t really know if I drank it or it drank me but it was delicious and a good realization that I drink very little white Burg as far to many are pre oxed or overworked, this leads me to Chablis more often than not

1996 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra

Its hard to put Clerico in the modernist category after this (but I know he is!), this was so well integrated and so much fun to drink. I popped it straight in a decanter and the put a huge lamb butterfly on the BBQ, and 1 and a half hours later both were gone and I was happy, seriously good booze.

2006 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge

It was this or an 05 Pavelot SLB La Dominode, WOW this is dark and I like it, It reminds me a lot of some of the better NZ Pinots I tried when down there on a bike trek a few weeks ago, lovely supple palate controlled with a little oak leaking through, this is the riper side of PN but the sweetness says in check and there is great drive and palate presence. Off to finish it off.

MT

Thanks for the note. I had this a few weeks ago and also was impressed. I thought there was a lot going on in the flavor profile, that the wine was in no way tired, and that it was nicely balanced. My only thought was that the finish was a little shorter than I expected.

Surprised to hear that about the 96 Clerico… the 93 Ginestra is drinking oh so beautifully now, but the 90s IMO still need time… I would think that the 96 would have a pretty hard shell… can you be more specific… That said, I agree that Clerico at his best shows really genius

Michael,
I agree with you on Dugat-Py. I have always found them to be over-oaked and over-extracted though some friends tell me that things are changing and the '06s are much better.

Nice notes, Michael
