Dominus Proprietary Red Wine 2000:
Smokey, almost slightly tarry nose, with expressive blackberry and some earthy, slightly damp, mushroom qualities. This color, aromas and immediate flavors of this wine lead me to believe this bottle is a little advanced, though I must admit I have rarely, even on release, cared for this Dominus very much. Some bramble, truffle, black currant, burnt espresso, sweet cherries and dried herbs form the base of the cuvee. The tertiary notes are really just spotty bits that pop up here and there- leather, plums and smashed olives. I’ll find another one in the next few months and try it out. I would hate to speculate on the state of this wine based on this bottle’s performance. However, if others have similar experiences than I won’t rush to try one. My last note on the wine was from last year and the numerical score was only 88. Like I said, I never really dug this one. 84 points
As a big Dominus fan, I’m disappointed to read your notes and rating, and would be ticked to pay the fare for such a lower performer.
Luckily this was dumped pretty early on in its life in MD. I picked up 4 bottles at $50 each. The first three were very good with brambly fruit and herbs, not entirely what I look for in Dominus, more like a Rhone style wine, but tasty nonetheless.
My last bottle was drank about 4 months ago in a big tasting. Most people didn’t care for it that much, I thought it was good but the weakest of my bottles and I was glad not to be sitting on any more.
It wasn’t a steal at $50, but I don’t regret the purchase.
