Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Da Capo 2003:
Normally I would begin a note with something about a wine’s color or perhaps something about the aromatic profile. But I’m not sure it maters. What’s the point with this freak-du-pape? Ripe (over), sweet, massive, dense. Macerated cherries, red currants, melted licorice, sugar-coated plums . . . think sweet, glycerin goodness. If you like this manner of simple, monolithic deliciousness then I can’t see any reason why this wine will not be the bee’s knees for you. For me I am just glad to have tried it . . . once. 90 points
I had this shortly after the 100+ debacle, and find it to be along the lines of the monolithic mess that John mentions that it is.
The 1998 is only beginning to crack it’s shell. I feel that this should being heading somewhere, at least based on the fact that the 1998 is.
Some of my comments on this wine have to do with the da Capo style, sure, but I would say most have to do with the vintage Dan. I think the '98 and '00 are better wines for me, thought still not “my” wines.
Not sure I understand your ‘dumb comment’ issue - just another opinion about the wine as far as I see it. Perhaps that last sentence did not need to be used, but just as with many wines on these boards, some seem to be ‘sacred’ and therefore whenever someone mentions ANYTHING less than stellar reviews, others will jump on board . . .
Makes for lively conversations as far as I’m concerned . . .
Something like this does not sound like a 90 pointer, but that’s my interpretation. I am not a fan of most 2003 Chateauneufs, I’ve only had a few that were well-balanced and not complete messes.
