TN: Dinner with Jesús Barquín at Fernando's "En Español"

DINNER WITH JESÚS BARQUÍN AT FERNANDO’S “EN ESPAÑOL” - (6/13/2009)

Saturday was time for a cozy dinner at Fernando’s with wonderful grilled meats and a great lineup of wines. In honor of Jesús and his family it was a dinner “en español”, and we were joined by José Fuentes and a nice couple from San Sebastián, with whom it just so happened my wife and I had a mutual friend. How odd.

  • 1994 Bott-Geyl Riesling Grafenreben - France, Alsace, Zellenberg, Alsace AOC
Light to medium gold color. Nose of dry grasses and a touch of apricot. Just a touch off dry on the palate, full bodied and well balanced, but not terribly interesting. (87 pts.)
  • 1997 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin En Motrot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Medium ruby color, cloudy. Nose of earth, coffee and raspberries. Presented relatively closed on the palate with fine tannins and a floral/berry finish. It got better as the night went on, and it may have been I had it too early. (88 pts.)
  • 1992 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Black with deep ruby rim. Nose of charcoal, blackberry syrup, black currants and dry spice. Good acid spine on the palate, medium to full bodied and smooth. Very nice Cab. (92 pts.)
  • N.V. Equipo Navazos Jerez-Xérès-Sherry La Bota de Manzanilla “Las Cañas” Nº 16 - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Light lemon color. Very complex mix of grasses, flowers and yeasty notes, wonderful wine. (94 pts.)
  • 2005 Doña Paula Malbec Seleccion de Bodega - Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
Deep ruby rim with a black center. Nose of plum skin, blackberries, black tea and spices. Great acidity on the palate, full bodied. Very modern, fruit-forward wine, delicious. (92 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium ruby color, cloudy. Big, complex nose of menthol, tobacco, wildflowers and clove. Beautifully precise red berries on the palate, with a few mint leaves thrown in. (94 pts.)
  • 2001 Achaval-Ferrer Malbec Finca Altamira - Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, La Consulta
Deep ruby/black color. Floral nose with blackberries, spicebox and tobacco. Full bodied on the palate with good presence. At the mid palate there’s a taste of caramel that is intriguing. Still youthful tannins. (92 pts.)
  • 2000 Chateau Dereszla Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos - Hungary, Hegyalja, Tokaji
Medium gold color. Nose of dry leaves, apricots and honey. Great acid spine really gives this one some interest; medium sweet but well balanced with honeyed flavors. Very pretty. (91 pts.)

I would rate two wines as co-WOTN: the Marcoux CdP and the Equipo Navazos Nº 16, from Jesús and Eduardo Ojeda’s Equipo Navazos. A good showing for the white wine!

Thanks all for coming over, it was fun. Marcoux and the Tokaji were the best wines of the day imho, although fortunately there were no clunkers. My experiences with Marcoux have been uneven but this bottle was beautiful…
