CHRISTMAS 2009 WITH WASHINGTON STATE WINES - (12/28/2009)
We celebrated Christmas this year with my folks and brothers in Seattle. Went with an all WA state wine lineup, recommendations courtesy of the good guys at McCarthy and Scheiring wine shop in Queen Anne. Served with grilled NY Strip steaks, the wines all performed very well.
-
2007 Owen Roe Red Wine Yakima Valley - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
Opened 30 minutes before consumption (no decant) - more red than black fruits on the color spectrum, those not by much. The Cabernet Franc shows through nicely with the tobacco notes, and the wine is very well balanced and drinking wonderfully. (90 pts.) -
2007 Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
Open 30 minutes before serving, no decanting. Waves of dark berries, currant, and tobacco on the palate. The wine has good symmetry and fine-grained, sophisticated tannins. Long finish with firm tannins, but lots of fun to drink with a little bit of air. (92 pts.) -
2007 Syncline S/G/M Steep Creek Ranch - USA, Washington, Columbia Gorge
First bottle I’ve ever encountered with a glass stopper - very interesting! Opened about 45 minutes before consumption, this medium-bodied rhone blend shows dark fruited flavors with licorice, spice and some garrigue peeking through. Wine is balanced, and not too funky, and the oak treatment seemed minimal. Nicely made wine. (90 pts.) -
2007 Gramercy Cellars Syrah - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
Opened and consumed with about 30 minutes of air. It’s a dark, meaty syrah fashioned to please - balanced extraction, judicious use of oak, and a dusty, earthy finish. A popular wine tonight- the bottle disappeared quickly. (90 pts.)
