TN: Chave Hermitage Blanc, Gangloff Cote Rotie La Sereine

  • 1999 Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Sereine Noir - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (3/14/2009)
Black as night, this Cote-Rotie had an amazingly intoxicating bouquet of wet earth, roasted meats, crushed rose petals and mushrooms. Sadly, the palate betrayed the nose. In the mouth it was quite light and refreshing with red berries and a soft, plummy note; not at all bad, just not what I expected after such an amazing nose. (89 pts.)
  • 2002 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage (3/13/2009)
Started off with quite a bit of bottle funk on the nose. Once that blew away, the predominant aromas were of honeyed wax, butterscotch and white fruits. In the mouth the wine is quite thick and heady with an almond-honey characteristic to it. It’s in a dumb phase right now and could definitely benefit from a little more acidity or bottle age. I’ll give it a B for the time being.

I liked the Gangloff a whole lot more than Jorge did. The nose were strange at first sniffy sniff, but then it exploded up my nostrils. The wine, while not as explosive as the the smell, was still very delicious and paired perfectly with my steak. Jorge had salmon. What a wuss.

Hey bud…read the TN again. I liked the wine well enough; I was just surprised when tasting it how it differed so much from its nose. I don’t give away 90+ points like some “so-called doctors”.
It was a Lenten Friday…had to do the fish.

89 sux, haven’t you gotten the memo?
