I know I said I would do another Copain last night, but I saw a bottle sticking out a bit too far out of a rack and went to push it in…then it just kind of stuck to my hand, so I had to open it instead. Ill do the Copain tonight.
Anyway, this wine kicks some serious ass. Giant nose of bright berries and baking rack spices…lots of cinnamon. Some great beefy notes in there as well. The palate is heavy and creamy an just when you think its going to finish sweet theres this burst of cleansing acid. Similar process as very young Spatlese Prum for instance. Wow…I loved that bottle.
Edit: BTW, I like Carlisle, but I had yet to have a WOW bottle. This was it.
My favorite of Mike’s lineup, year in and year out, is the Carlisle Vineyard Zin. The Montafi is a very close second, though.
Interesting, as my tastes are the opposite. I find the Carlisle Carlisle more structured and need of more age than I prefer. The Montafi seems more plush and forward and has been great in every vintage since 2002.
As for the 2006, I loved it (and I use the past tense as mine have been consumed), but some, including Mike Officer I believe, feel that it should be consumed relatively soon due to its having some residual sugar.

I am among those “some” and it was never one of my favorite Carlisles because of the RS (but then it appears that I am very sensitive to RS).
