Some nice wines over the last few weeks…
2002 Scherrer Winery Pinot Noir Fort Ross Vineyard “High Slopes” - From magnum- mushrooms, all spice, pine needles, black cherry and just a hint of cola on the nose. Still quite young on the palate with nice silky texture, same red berry fruit and some nice earthy backbone to the palate. Quite a long finish with just a hint of astringency. This can age for considerably longer, but is drinking very well now.
2007 Smith Madrone Riesling Estate Bottled - Limestone, lychee, grapefruit and a whiff of sweet honey on the nose. Quite serious on the palate with lemon peel, grapefruit, tons of vibrant acidity and a nice sweet note on the finish. Still a baby, but I am having trouble keeping from sharing with friends.
2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets - Violets, mushrooms, lilacs, roses with lovely high toned red fruit in the background - very feminine pretty nose. More masculine on the palate with supple red cherry and a beautiful balance between fruit and acid. Paired beautifully with partridge and celeriac.
2004 Domaine Michelot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières - Buttered popcorn, pears, peaches, limestone and honeysuckle on the nose, all in very harmonious balance. Great body and texture to it, also beautifully blalanced between chewy dense texture, acidic grip and a lovely sweet candied ginger note. I continue to have very good fortune with 04 white burgundies and they only seem to be getting better with age.
2004 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja Veraton - Still quite dark in color. Juniper, white pepper, blackberry and a strong whiff of cocoa powder on the nose. Quite ripe on the palate with gobs of blackberry jam, yet has enough spiciness and structure to keep from being monolithic. Nice medium long finish with just a hint of tannic bite.
