TN: Barolo gathering at Foraged

BAROLO GATHERING AT FORAGED - Foraged, Baltimore (10/26/2024)

Todd emailed us a few months ago and Tom organized a dinner. Naturally, we drank a lot of excellent Nebbiolos.

Champagne

  • 2008 Gosset Champagne Celebris Rosé - France, Champagne
Copper/pale salmon color. Very complex vinous nose displaying concentrated red and yellow fruit, strawberry, raspberry soda, almond, cooper, brioche, a hint of mint, rainwater and limestone. Excellent concentration, perfectly ripe concentrated pale red and yellow fruit, medium fine medium generous mousse, rich and deeply toned, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long concentrated red and yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of cooper and strawberry at the end. This is a concentrated rose that is drinking like wine. IF the palate is more creamy, I would have rated three points higher. (94 points)

White Burgundy

  • 2012 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
Very ripe fruit expression, very nutty, almond, and marzipan notes. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it was from Jura. I wouldn't pay $50. Not premoxed but lacks energy, freshness and precision. (90 points)
  • 2007 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Medium expressive nose displaying dark yellow fruit, lemon curd, orange peel, clementine, marzipan, burnt sugar, sweet spices and limestone. There is a hint of pyrazine/green at the end which reminds me some of the 20 Chablis. Medium concentration, ripe golden yellow fruit, deeply toned, medium acidity and mineral, and a medium finish with a hint of green and caramel at the end. Complex nose but a bit green. The palate is a bit flat. Overall, very enjoyable. (93 points)

Roagna

  • 1974 Roagna Barbaresco Riserva Pajè - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Still showing generous rich red fruit, cherry, strawberry, ash, strong iron, grille cep, cedar, sweet spices and scorched earth. There is a slight hint of dirty damp cellar which is not terribly bothersome. Excellent concentration, generous dense red fruit, rich and full, bright acidity, iron mineral, and a long dense red fruit driven finish with a hint of ash and cedar at the end. This is a full body Barbaresco that is showing well. There is a hint of "dirty" nose that I associate with some of the 70s French and Italian wines. Really nice showing. Perhaps my rating is a couple points higher for the age. (95 points)

2001 Barolo

All of them were exceptional!

  • 2001 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Expressive nose displaying rich, warm red fruit, cherry compote, cherry liqueur, a hint of ash, cinnamon, other sweet spices, and iron mineral. Very good concentration, nicely layered, generous red fruit, warm and round, medium acidity and strong iron mineral, noticeable tannins, and a long ripe red fruit driven finish with iron and ash at the end. This is drinking beautifully, though it was overshadowed by the next four incredible wines. The wine to seek at auction. (94 points)
  • 2001 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Beautifully perfumed nose displaying concentrated red fruit, dry cherry, cherry liqueur, rose, cedar, leather, cumin and cinnamon, and iron. Perfectly integrated palate, layers upon layers of rich red fruit, exceptional precision and detail, perfect balance, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, and a long generous red fruit driven finish with cumin and cedar at the end. This has really opened up. My WOTN. (98 points)
  • 2001 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Expressive nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, black cherry, blackberry, cherry, licorice, dark spices and iron. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, rich yet silky, bright acidity, medium iron mineral, noticeable tannins and a long generous black fruit driven finish with licorice at the end. Excellent showing, a bit more masculine compared to the Giacosas. (95 points)
  • 2001 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Perfectly mature nose displaying opulent black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, licorice, balsamico, tar, dark spices and iron mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of opulent sweet black fruit, rich, warm and round, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, and a long generous black fruit driven finish with balsamico at the end. This particular bottle is super expressive. Perhaps not as “nuanced” as the Giacosas but excellent nevertheless. I wonder how this will compare with the 01 Monfortino if tasted blind. (96 points)
  • 2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, a hint of cherry liqueur, licorice, tar, rose, dark spices and iron. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, rich and opulent, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, noticeable but fine tannins, and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish. I slightly prefer the Rabaja for the balance and harmony. (96 points)

Thank for the great write up Kevin. Great to see everyone again. That was a fun night and overall the wines showed quite well. I will try to get my notes onto this thread later this week.

Thanks again
