Artadi Vina El Pison 2005:
Deep inky purple/black color, with less aromatics than the '04, but still full of fresh red/purple flowers, smoke and cherry liqueur notes. For the first hour or so the wine is a little fat- too massive to show off- but later the flavors seem to become more sophisticated and pure. The '04 was a revelation for me, truly an impressive wine that demanded attention right from the cork-pop. This wine, while well-endowed and clearly cut from the same cloth, is only very good. But it manages to toe the line successfully between raw power and elegance very well. In five or six years this will be fun to revisit, but, for now, I cannot see value in popping another one of these. 93 points
My bet is that this will eventually surpass the '04. The '05 Rioja vintage is more complete than '04 in general terms -and, probably for that matter, the wines are more backward at age four.
