TN: Arcadian 2001 Lafond PN (Sta Rita Hills)

Would, quite literally, have guessed old world Syrah blind when I opened the bottle, as this has a wonderful acidic lift and leanness to it and a nose of bacon and umami with just a touch of dark red fruit. Tannins have softened but are still present. No heat and a medium finish that is both glycerol weight and tartness. Overall the leanness for a wine that seems like it was fairly fruit forward in its youth is surprising but as it opens up that seems to mellow and there is still a note of aged cough syrup not unlike a 15yo Shiraz. After an hour the finish is heavier and a touch plodding for Pinot but the nose opens up and becomes a bit more floral. I love the meatiness and the palate is appealing and balanced overall. I give it a 90.
