TN: and Wine Hunter - Coulee de Serrant

2006 Nicolas Joly Savennières-Coulée de Serrant Clos de la Coulée de Serrant
I stumbled across this wine yesterday in the PLCB store at 19th and Chestnut
n Philly the price is $34.99

Medium gold with a viscous texture not unlike a Sauterne. Lots of wet wool,
lanolin and great minerality, on the nose along with trademark oxidative notes but not
in a bad way. The palate is rich medium to full bodied with flavors similar to the nose.
An hour later all sorts of tropical fruit showed up mangos, pineapple and peach.
Very complex wine.

It seems aged at this point based on the color and don’t have a clue about its ageability.
I haven’t tasted any of the recent vintages. Amazing price and wonder how the PLCB got
this so cheap, Wine searcher shows it going for around $70.
Is this some kind of dump by Joly or his importer?

They have over 180 cases of this over 10% of hisproduction.

Was this vintage that bad that this much got dumped in PA? It did not show that way.

Interesting, Mark. I had the chance to taste another ‘sweet’ (non-Sauternes) French white at WineExchange at the Loire tasting and found that they were also pricing it very aggressively. Perhaps the non-Sauternes French wines are just not selling well on the market and need some impetus. I picked up a bottle of the 2004 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine which sounds similar to your bottle, although it didn’t quite have the mouthfeel of Sauternes - a bit lighter, assumably from more acidity.

Todd,
I should have mentioned that this wine is dry as are most if not all Savennières.

I’ll get rid of that link so the page view isn’t screwed up.

We had a pretty good Savennières later at your house that night Todd.

Thanks for the note Mark. Had not heard of that sub-appellation previously.

There are two Cru appellations in Savennières; Coulee De Serrant owned soley by Joly and Roche Aux Moine with several owners.
