AN INDIAN, A GREEK, AND A CYPRIOT - The Mad greek (12/16/2009)
I went to sample some wines at the Mad Greek in Cleveland Heights. They have a “sale” on wines; anything on the list for $22 a bottle.

2008 Sula Chenin Blanc - India, Nashik
First wine I can remember trying from India. Light golden in color. Served very cold, it took some time to warm up. The nose is still quiet but has some honey and orange notes. Thick, slightly viscous. Slightly sweet. A bit generic but pretty much varietally correct. This would go well with Indian or spicy food. $22 on “sale” at the Mad Greek. (86 pts.) -
2006 Kouros Agiorgitiko - Greece, Peloponnisos, Nemea
This got better as it got air. Plenty left for Day 2 so perhaps I will update the score further. Ruby red in color. The nose is dusty cherries. With air it got more of a bitter note (in a good way). On the palate, this drinks like a simple Bordeaux. Cherries, raspberries, green bell pepper and cigar tobacco notes. Nice finish. Works well with food. Interesting wine. On “sale” for $22 at the Mad Greek (86 pts.)

N.V. KEO St. John - Cyprus, Commandaria
A glass was poured gratis for me at the Mad Greek. I don’t know how long the bottle was open. Bartender called it a Port but it seemed more white based to me, perhaps Muscat? I see CT lists the grape as Xynisteri (is that red or white)?. Anyway, deep brown/amber in color, clear and bright. The nose is very nice with chocolate covered apricot scents. This is sweet and smooth. No heat. Like drinking a liquefied Tootsie Roll. Nice to sip on this on a cold winter night. (88 pts.)
