TN: An impromptu gathering at Adam’s house

AN IMPROMPTU GATHERING AT ADAM’S HOUSE - Washington DC (1/22/2013)

  • 1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Expressive very ripe nose of black fruits, licorice, smoke meat, kir, fruit cake, garrigue and tapenade. Sweet semi dry black fruit driven palate, incredible concentration and youth, good acidity and nicely integrated tannins. If a sound bottle, major upside potential, perhaps it will reach the apogee of the 61? (98 pts.)
  • 1990 Château Figeac - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
This particular bottle displays heavily cab franc driven green nose that is not bothersome. Black fruits, caramel and mint. Sweet dark fruits, medium concentration and airy silky palate. Lovely wine that will go well with food. (92 pts.)
  • 1995 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Initially thought a bit off but Justin was absolutely right for suggesting to give a few minutes for the wine to settle. This is a beautiful fully matured 1er crus Burgundy displaying raspberry preserves, sous bois, truffle and light caramel. Silky palate, generous sweet fruits, silky palate and nice sweet finish. As expected not showing the complexity of VR GCs but drinking perfectly and providing as much pleasure. (93 pts.)
  • 1986 Château Cheval Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
This is a fully matured classic Cheval Blanc. As Adam mentioned, atypical of the 86 as the wine is soft without any hard edge. Bright delicate sweet red fruits, mushroom, cedar and truffle. Medium concentration, silky palate, delicate sweet fruits, perfectly balanced and seamless. Great wine that I can drink all day. (95 pts.)
  • 2001 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Paull initially thought a bit off, it opened up impressively about an hour in a decanter. Big jammy nose, black fruits, licorice, clove, balsamico and truffle. Intense palate with dark sweet fruits, bright acidity and still noticeable but not obtrusive tannins. At the moment, it is an impressive wine that needs time. Darryl commented on overwhelming balsamic note which I agreed but it didn’t bother me. so caveat emptor. (95 pts.)
