Got this on winecommune a few years ago for something like $40. Incredible nose of fruit, flowers, cedar, tobacco and forest floor. Tannins are fully integrated, nice acidity that makes you want some more. Everyone was amazed at how clean, pure, and elegant the wine showed, and the consensus was that while fully mature nowere near a downturn.
I am so happy that I’ve started to add quite a few magnums to my collection lately, maybe the best way to age a wine!
Otto,
I love the Turnbull cabs and buy them every year. They are a consistently good value, even though the price has jumped 30% or so the last few years.
Of course, I like to drink them much younger than 15 years old.
Try to find a Turnbull Black Label Otto, I believe the Maybach now uses the grapes that went into that wine. Always top shelf.
Jack, I believe Maybach is taking some of those grapes but that Turnbull still makes that wine.
Turnbull still makes the black label, but the price is significantly higher. The one I just had was extremely pure that matured beautifully and it was their regular label.
If I ever break up the piggy bank and build a small cellar in the downstairs family room, I will make one with special racking for magnums only, I think they evolve better in that format.
One of my all time favorites is the 1986 Johnson-Turnbull, closely followed by the 1987. Both are still drinking beautifully. Not sure when the dropped the “Johnson,” but Turnbull makes a very nice Cab these days for the money.
