TN: Alzinger and Michel Magnien MSD

  • 2004 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibner Loibenberg - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau (6/26/2009)
Beautiful and precise wine, exactly what I expect from Alzinger. Right peach notes on the nose give way to an initially sharp, peppery, snappy and energetic palate. There is a subtlety and creaminess to the mid-palate with gorgeous acidity and precision. Rainwater, stone and citrus. Still quite young but utterly beguiling. (92 pts.)
  • 2000 Michel Magnien Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (6/26/2009)
Hot dog, wine like this makes me wish I were cellaring more Burgundy. Knockout nose of smoke and sous bois give way to a silken palate with mineral, raspberry and more smoke. This is really pretty and still seems a bit young, but it was worth getting into. Stunning aromatics. (90 pts.)

I love that Alzinger, and would add that the GV from that year/vineyard is also drinking nicely. While 2006 got a lot of focus from the wine press, in retrospect, 2004 has been a great vintage for Austrian whites in a sleek, elegant, harmonious style, and Alzinger really captured that well in this vintage.

From my limited tasting of Magnien, the only one I’ve ever enjoyed was the 04 MSD Millandes, which I thought was quite nice (I apparently am not as susceptible to the 04 green-ness.)
