This is a few months late, but in any case, here are some notes from a tasting at Acker in NYC. I tend to take only brief notes at tastings (as opposed to dinners when I can linger with a wine) but for what it’s worth…
ACKER 2004 TASTING PART ONE - (5/2/2009-5/3/2009)
-
2004 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Vireuils - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault (5/3/2009)
Beautiful sweet fruit on the nose; same on palate, plus good balancing acidity. (92 pts.) -
2004 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis (5/3/2009)
sweet fruit on the nose, but lots of tartness on the initial palate. not much there at all on the midpalate, with some sweet fruit on the finish. the nose is beautiful, like a 92… but the palate disappoints. (87 pts.) -
2004 Henri Perrot-Minot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (5/3/2009)
pretty sweetness on nose, lighter than the Dujac Charmes tasted just before. earthy on the palate, with puckering tannins that draw you in for another sip. retasted at the end of the tasting, still really nice. not quite as good as the dujac, but not by much - this is a better value. (93 pts.) -
2004 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (5/3/2009)
beautiful nose; full, rich body and nice depth (93 pts.) -
2004 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (5/3/2009)
slight port note on the nose; lavender spice on palate. delicate, muted flavor. (88 pts.) -
2004 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (5/2/2009)
Slate and sweet red fruit on the perfumed nose. Ruby color; a bit of dirt on the palate along with subtle, slightly aged-tasting sweet fruit; moderately tannic finish. Nice, but not a life-changing example of a First-Growth. To be fair, had this at a tasting, and this style of wine needs an extended leisurely tasting to show its best. It did have a refined sense that hinted at more. (92 pts.)
-
2004 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Superiore Paleo Rosso - Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore (5/3/2009)
smooth; not much typical cab franc graphite. sweet, a bit jammy. 92-3. (92 pts.) -
2004 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (5/3/2009)
interesting, slightly muted nose of dates/fig, and a petrol-like note. Palate a bit flat. Tannic, still young. (88 pts.) -
2004 Azelia Barolo Bricco Fiasco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (5/3/2009)
oxidative on nose - very port-like and even a hint of apricot / peach, very rare for me in a red. a lot going on in the full palate - very tannic though. (91 pts.) -
2004 Vila Viniteca Rioja Paisajes IX - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (5/3/2009)
interesting dirt and orange peel on the nose. not much on the palate, ok. (86 pts.) -
2004 Cavus Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District (5/3/2009)
nose slightly muted, oak apparent, with sweet, stewed cherry. palate: concentrated, spicy but primary, not complex. a bit similar to Faust but not as enjoyable. potential here though. (91 pts.) -
2004 Shirvington Cabernet Sauvignon - Australia, South Australia, McLaren Vale / Barossa (5/3/2009)
Herbal nose, tiny bit of crushed rock, pruney fruit. sweet oak on palate. (88 pts.) -
2004 Ackerman Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (5/3/2009)
Nice nose, slightly floral, herby with oak - similar to Copain Garys’ syrah I had recently. Balanced and flavorful on palate. Quite nice. (92 pts.)
