TN: A value Côte de Beaune red from a producer that flies under the radar

  • 2009 Domaine Edmond Monnot & Fils Maranges Le Saugeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Maranges (7/9/2014)
A value Côte de Beaune red from a producer that flies under the radar. Colour light red. A bouquet of field strawberries, cranberry, red cherries and other red berries with a little lift and perfume. An attractive pure, clean nose. A sweet entry on palate but more power than expected. In the mouth, pure, clean, elegant and refined. Juicy and ripe. A bit savoury, but largely red fruited flavours, raspberries, red currants, a little cranberry and particularly sour cherry. A touch of spice and some minerals. But nothing as deep on the palate as plums or earth. Good energy, intensity and acidity. Food friendly. Subtle oak treatment (I understand that this cuvée sees no new oak). Reasonably smooth tannins. Not hugely complex or detailed. (89 pts.)

Thanks a lot. I love these types of well made Burgs. Reminds me of a younger version of a wonderful Santenay from Paul Chapelle I had a year or so ago.

Here’s a good profile by Bill Nanson of the producer: Profile: Domaine Edmond-Monnot (Maranges) – Burgundy-Report.

I’ve had several of the wines and found them to be in a similar style and enjoyable. I think 2009 was a good vintage for this producer.

I’ve had Maranges from Bachelet-Monnot. Hadn’t heard of this Monnot.
