2001 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots Vieille Vigne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (11/2/2014)
Colour rusty red, with some evolution obvious. Immediately on the nose a little autumnal, dry autumn leaves with funky, sous bois notes and a little peat soil. Along with the musk and old spice aromas, there is also a Fourrier signature high toned top note of bright red cherries, cranberries and raspberries, with a suggestion of chalk and minerals. Tart, cranberry flavours on entry to the palate. The wine is quite high acid with sour cherry along with savoury, funky, mushroom and wet underbrush flavours. This is a relatively lean, vibrant, persistent and focused wine, that is a good food wine, although it may not be to everyone’s palate due to that leanness. Clean and pure with very fine tannins. I really like it and the long, mineral and chalky finish. Ideally, I’d give it another 5 years cellar time. You need to decant this wine a couple of hours before serving. (93 pts.)
