Here are a couple notes from over break in case anyone is interested. None of these were blind, just some random bottles served to friends to try and get them interested in wine. Some showed better than others, the highlight probably being the Lynch-Moussas, which I’d never had before and don’t see much of on these boards.
1996 Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (12/20/2014)
Garnet red, a touch cloudy. The nose filled the room with aromas of dark cherry, earth, spice and a touch of leather. Similar on the palate with sweet dark fruit, good spice, earth and root/ cola; decent concentration but doesn’t live up to its nose. Flavors are well integrated, tannins still a bit tough at first but eased over the evening. Strong acidity. Nice finish, a little drying and tart. I wish I’d been able to spend more time with this. For all it’s concentration it lacked some depth.
Good - drink or hold
1983 Château Lynch-Moussas - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (12/26/2014)
Beautiful nose showing floral/ rose notes, black fruit and leather. This really gained after 30 minutes in the decanter. Palate shows rich black fruit on entry, sweet roses and some savory notes; very pleasing but not very complex. Strong fruit presence, while it shows it’s age the fruit is still at the front. Finish is short and drying.
Very Good
1995 Château La Louvière - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (12/31/2014)
Similar to my last note, though this bottle showed a little bit more youthful. Nose is full of black current, strong bell pepper, gravel, and vanilla. Very prominent nose. Entry shows bell pepper supported by dark fruit and earth. This fans out in the middle with a green chile note and into the finish where there is an earthy mushroom flavor and some unresolved oak. Tannins are fine grained.
Very Good – Hold
2001 Louis Jadot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Porrets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (1/3/2015)
Deep cordovan color in the glass with some thinning around the edges. Nice nose shows high-toned red fruit; cranberries, strawberries, and tart cherry. There is also an earthy/ stemmy funk that lingers, along with hints of leather. The fruit is sweet on entry but fades out in the middle to show a stony, hard, and hollow backside. Finish shows some spice and after two hours in the decanter the flavors had rounded out a little to show a nice sweet/ savory trade off that played well with the high acid level. Despite it gaining a little presence in the decanter, the backside of this remained too hard to support the subtle flavors that are present. Finish is medium-short and drying. Average at best.
