A FEW BOTTLES AT KOKKARI IN SF - (11/17/2009)

I met my friend Brad P. at Kokkari in San Francisco. I was amazed how packed the place was at 8:00 on a Tuesday night. The food was really excellent as wass the wine service. We purchased one bottle off the list and they waived corkage for the other two.

  • 2008 Mercouri Estate Kallisto - Greece, Peloponnisos
Green golden in color. Very aromatic nose that has a lot of lemon chiffon. Also some lime notes. Plenty of minerals. This is crisp and refreshing. Not complex but has a nice streak of acidity that went very well with the food. Quite tasty. $45 off the list. (88 pts.)
  • 1997 Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Oh my, is this in a good place. Ruby in color with just a bit of rust. The nose is wonderful aged Barolo. Cherries, rose petals, tar all coming to gether in a complex and aromatic nose. On the palate, this is layered and complex. No, this is not mind boggling, but it is really good. Long finish. This is whay ageing a good Barolo is all about. Perfect with our ffood. (92 pts.)
  • 2006 Saxum James Berry Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
This had been opened and a glass poured. The bottle was recapped and opened a few hours later. Gorgeous showing. Great nose with black raspebrries, plums, grilled meats, black pepper and some black cherries. Huge wine. 16.6% Alc and not a sign of it (until the next morning perhaps). Smooth, seamless. just a real show stopper. These are truly amazing wines. This went very well with a “Ravioli” dish. Even our old school waiter was blown away with a taste. (97 pts.)
