TN: A Few 2005 Oregon Pinots

A FEW 2005 OREGON PINOTS - (2/18/2012)

I cracked a few bottles of 2005 Oregon Pinot recently to see how they are coming along. Common wisdom is to drink your 2006s first and that’s what I’ve been doing. While I think all of these examples will reward some more cellar time, none was hard or unapproachable at this stage. Note: Stand any of these upright for at least a week before opening to settle the fine, delicate sediment.

  • 2005 Sineann Pinot Noir Schindler - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Decanted 2 hours. Very deeply colored. Firm chunky sediment. Deep but closely held nose offers glimpses of dark fruit, smoke and savory spices. Rich but bright on the palate with a silky texture and black fruit flavors, this wine is complete balanced and long on the finish. Full bodied with the wood and tannins well absorbed, this is still rather unevolved although already delicious. There is a good chance for positive developement. Drink 2014-2018. (91 pts.)

  • 2005 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Abbott Claim Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Decanted 1 hour. Medium-dark with some fine, suspended sediment. The lovely nose features well melded notes of fresh berries, sweet spice and a floral perfume. Bright, complex, and well integrated flavors combine juicy raspberries (with the seeds), black cherry and plum skin with a nicely sweet, viscous core, medium-full body and a dark fruited, warm finish. This comes across as more harmonious than the 2005 Savoya. It drinks great right now and should continue to for years to come. Impressive. Now-2017. (92 pts.)

  • 2005 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Savoya - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
Decanted 1 hour. Darkly colored, clear purple-tinged edge. Wood smoke and exotic spices with some brambles and berry leafs in the nose lead to bright, focused flavors and red and black plum, tart cherry juice and a hint of sweet liqueur. Well delineated, quite tart and still rather primary this works well now with food but could use a few more years to come together and a gain some complexity. (The 2005 Abbott Claim is showing much better at this stage) Drink 2014-2018. (89 pts.)

  • 2005 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Notorious - USA, Oregon, Yamhill County
Decanted 2 hours. Medium color, clear rim. Lovely high toned aromatics are all about red fruit, sweet and Asian spices and a touch of cedar or rosemary. Elegant and balanced flavors feature sweet red cherry, cinnamon and cranberry. The components are all playing well together and this is a delicious wine now. I think it will become more complex with a bit more time in the cellar. Now-2016. (91 pts.)

Thanks for sharing the notes.

Nice notes, John. I grab an '05 every now and then, myself, to check progression. Most recently an '05 Van Duzer Estate Pinot Noir. I haven’t been disapointed and think that many of the better SVD bottlings are still on an upward progression. This is gonna be a fun vintange when it hits its peak.

I had the pleasure of sharing a glass of the '05 Brick House Evelyn’s with Doug Tunnell yesterday. It’s singing, but it was several hours in a decanter. Give it time.

Bob, I got a good chuckle this morning from your avatar.

Isn’t that Moe Howard in the middle?
