TN: A couple of Italians and a Pinot Gris

A COUPLE OF ITALIANS AND A PINOT GRIS - Pranzo’s (4/16/2011)

My wife and I, and another couple visited a very nice Italian restaurant that has no liquor license, so allows people to BYO. The food was great as was the company. Simple pleasures are the best.

  • 2010 Sineann Pinot Gris Wyeast - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Glass cork. Silvery gold in color. On opening I thought this was a bit too tart and acidic. The nose wasn’t giving up much either. After about 15 minutes and with some food, it seemed to fall into place. A nice mineral nose with some sea air. On the palate, this is crisp with nice mouthfeel. Seems more mineral/less fruit driven than prior versions which works well especially with food. Might have been served a bit too cold a first as well. (90 pts.)
  • 1998 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Conca - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Popped and poured, this should have been decanted. Took about 30 minutes to start opening and the last glass was the best. Ruby in color. The nose, after air, is cherries, smoke, tar and roses. Layered in tight layers on the palate, this is delicious. Medium bodied and well balanced. Great with the food. (92 pts.)
  • 2001 Villa Cafaggio Cortaccio Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Popped and poured, this needed about 5 minutes and started to take off. Ruby/purple. Great nose of cassis, leather and just a hint of smoked bell pepper. On the palate, this is still youthful but quite good. Showing a nice streak of acidity that worked well with the food. Long finish. This is still young, but no harm opening now, but needs some air as it kept improving. I saved some for Day 2. (92 pts.)
