With roast chicken, root vegs and truffle oil-infused mashed potatoes:
2002 Jadot Clos des Ursules, Beaune 1er Cru - Outstanding bottle of wine. Perfectly-balanced melange of dark fruits, spice, earth, underbrush and minerality. A long life ahead of it. What really put the wine over the top were the depth and complexity. A mile deep with a super-long finish. Very lively acidity.
2002 Chorey, Beaune Les Cras, Beaune 1er Cru - Suffered a bit after the Jadot Ursules. Not as much depth and a little over-roasted quality, but a bit more powerful. Also leaned toward the dark part of the fruit spectrum. Maybe a little young and may need a little more time to gain complexity. Could use a bit more acidity, I think. But a very good wine in any case. I’ll gladly drink it any time.
Nice notes, Steve. I’m especially appreciative of the data point on the Ursules. I opened an '02 Jadot Theurons about 6 months ago and it was drinking beautifully, but most of the recent notes I’ve seen on the Ursules advise to continue waiting. It sounds from your note, though, like it’s worth checking in on one. Maybe I should try to dig one out sometime soon.
Steve,
Thanks for the note on the Ursules. I have been a huge fan for many years now of this offering. We are drinking our 97s as of late. I bought a bunch of the 05s recently as it blew my socks off the few times I tasted it recently. It actually quite reminded me of the 02. I have a question for you guys. Did the 02 ever shut down? I ask because the 05 is so good now I have been having trouble keeping my hands off it.
