TN: a bunch of Total Wine winery direct Champagnes

Just noticed I had a tiny bit of the Mailly Rose still in the fridge. Showing a bit more complexity with some earthy tones and an intriguing Bacon note. Not sure if gained complexity or if I just had palate fatigue when I opened it. Still my least favorite of their offerings.

Apollonis Theodorine Rose.

Of course a day after stating I don’t particularly enjoy rose, I would open a fantastic bottle which would make me eat my words. The back of the bottle states this is a blend of 53% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 17% Pinot Noir and was disgorged 08/20/21. Dosage of 9 grams per liter. Floral aromas with cherries, apples and smoke. Fruity attack on a medium bodied frame which transitions seamlessly to mineral and yeast notes, with a fair amount of bitterness, which is quite complementary and adds a nice contrast to the overt fruit. Finishes with reasonably authoritative acidity and a smoke note. Very pure and very quaffable feminine style. 91 points. $40 with coupon.

Tried a 2013 De Margerie brut tonight. Totally different wine than the NV. While the NV was full bodied and short on acid, this was rather light and bright, full of spiced apple notes and some surprising petrol and rubber flavors, which I have never experienced in champagne before. Feels light as a feather in the mouth but simultaneously mouth filling and broad. Mouthwatering acidity on the lengthy finish. Not complex but it’s better than the sum of it’s parts. Delicate and elegant. Drank this with a red sauced sausage pizza from Domino’s that a friend showed up with unexpectedly. Turned out to be one of the best food and wine pairings I ever had. The Pizza brought out the flavor in the wine, and the wine cleansed the palate completely with remarkable ease. i don’t see myself ever opening another Syrah or beer with Pizza again. Champagne all the way!
