TN: 98 Pichon Lalande

And where the hell was my invite?

haha…had 2001 Pavie Mac last night anyway.

I popped one of these wednesday phil, took ages to come around, the last glass was great though.

I passed on the 2nd growths in 98. I went strictly RB. It sounds Phil that it may have been a mistake.
I didn’t pass on the 2000 though, geez how long will those suckers need to come around? Another 10 years? [scratch.gif]
Has anyone recently opened an 01 or 02, I have a bunch of them as well.

I re-tried the '01 sometime before Christmas 2008. My notes at the time are as follows:

This youngster was atypically masculine and dark for a Pichon Lalande (which is usually markedly femininely refined, elegant wine) - it reminded me of the 1985 version. More staunchly Pauillac, it showed firm structure and manly bones in its liquid dark fruit, cassis, mineral, slight topnotes of cherry and red raspberry, lead pencil shavings, murmurs of underlying black coffee, tobacco and charcoal, and fleeting hints of violets.

Quite nice, albeit not mature by a long shot. This was already quite enjoyable and has many years to go before full maturity. I figured it would be youthfully vigorous enough to handle the others’ venison.

I’ve not tried the '02 though.

I never bought any either, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised over the years when friends have served Medoc 98s to me blindly. I think it may have been an underrated year on the Left Bank.
