1998 Hudelot-Noellat ‘Richebourg’ – beautiful, translucent garnet; initially very restrained nose and palate, and then really blossomed: very pure nose of cherry, red raspberry, iron/earth, clove; good acidity, bright red cherry, raspberry, earth; fine tannins; lightweight but with a beguiling silky density. Very nice, with many great years ahead.
nice to hear. 98, 00 and 01 have all surprised to the upside.

Both the '01 RB and RSV are lovely, haven’t had any of the '98’s, but have found in general they are drinking pretty well now…

You’re right, this was your bottle below we shared. D’s bottle above is mentioned to have years ahead and this same youthfulness I found in your 92, P.

Drinking French With Todd French, P Robert and The Gang (Frenchie’s House): I was pretty amazed how fresh this wine was still, even with it being almost 20 vintages removed. There was a small hint of secondary nuance but it was more of a bit player here. Red fruits, smooth, nose of animal, although Frenchie called it “pickled”. Whatever you term it, I did not find it to be out of favor. Drank pretty well and nicely balanced.

I have not had those vintages, but greatness from any of them, or all of them, would not surprise me. IMO, Hudelot-Noellat is a top-shelf domaine since the mid-1990’s at least, though less consistent before that. I tend to prefer the RSV to the Richebourg, but that is just me.

I had the '98 a few years ago, and it was a little young, but vibrant and exciting, and incredibly complex. Tried another bottle a few months ago, and it seemed a little dead.
Maybe my bottles are going through an awkward stage ?
