TN: '93 & '94 Lytton Springs Winery Zinfandels

I learned from this WB thread that these wines were actually made by Ridge. Delicious wines with years to go.

  • 1993 Lytton Springs Winery Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (1/16/2012)
Pristine cork. Slow-oxed for 2 hours and then decanted for sediment. Nose is quite primary, with blackberry, kirsch, and baking spice. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Surprisingly fresh on the palate with ripe black cherries and blackberries livened by peppery spice and supported by really nice acidity. This seemed to get younger with air and some of the tertiary notes I detected early on (decaying leaves, forest floor) receded well into the background. Lovely wine and many years of life left. (90 pts.)
  • 1994 Lytton Springs Winery Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (1/7/2012)
90’s Dinner: Slow-oxed for about three hours before serving. Red berry fruit, violets and black pepper on the nose. Light to medium bodied with low to medium acidity. Fresh mixed berries and a bit of bramble. Quite primary. In a nice place but seems like it could easily go another decade or more. (89 pts.)

Nice Zach. I actually owned some of this, I think the 94? Black labels as I recall. Good stuff.

Right! Too lazy to take and upload a photo right now, but found this one on the web:

Terrific very age worthy wines. I’ve been lucky enough to try some well aged examples and I have been impressed by the concentration and relative youth they show. Does anyone know who the wine maker was historically?

Don’t know who the winemaker was, but Ridge sourced fruit here in the 70’s & 80’s & bought the Vineyard in 1991.

This was my favorite Zin of the '80’s. The '84 & (especially) '80 (two versions) were Killer!

The Ridge version was made with what seems like more oak - loved both versions.

The Ridge Lytton Springs bottling is 2nd only to their Geyserville, IMHO.

I misread this as “Ridge White Zinfandel.” I was quite confused
