I decided to open something special tonight after finishing my 57-page tax workbook, ready for submittal to my accountants…
1991 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Cuvée- USA, California, Napa Valley (2/27/2009)
While the nose is very tight and muted, the fruit on this wine is incredibly bright, fresh, and ripe. Silky mouthfeel, ripe tannins, red fruits, and a finish of blue and red fruits with a touch of mouth-drying tannins. This wine needed about 2 hours of breathing time to come into its own, but now that it is full there, it is wonderful. (92 pts.)
Interesting. The 91 Montelena Estate is one of my all-time favorite wines, but I don’t know if I’ve ever had this. I’m not surprised it’s good, but I am a little surprised it still takes time to open up.
I was, too. I was surprised in the beginning, as the fruit was so bright and sweet, still fresh, but the rest of the wine was closed up, maybe a bit astringent. 2 hours later, it opened up beautifully, with the fruit still there as bright as ever, but with a finish and midpalate that matches. I can only imagine how awesome the Estate Cab is from this year.
You must have a lot of financial sh*t going on to have a 58 page tax organizer. To that end I commend you!
As for the tasting notes, it’s nice to see an old-time Cali cab get the accolades. I’ve only been privy to taste a handful of Cali cabs this age and they haven’t disappointed!
