TN: '61 L Gros Clos Vougeot

’61 Louis Gros Clos Vougeot - Another of my “second to last” bottles, but they are there to be drunk so that’s what I am doing. Felt good to eat dinner at home, and I made a simple dinner of chicken breast sauteed with shallots and a medley of mushrooms. This bottle had been standing upright for several weeks. I had high hopes for the is bottle due to my previous experiences with the wine but more so because of the fantastic color and clarity of the wine in the bottle. I love when upon the first pour and smell you know you have a great wine. A wealth of fruit on the nose with great intensity. More spiciness than I remember. The fruit continues on the palate and the wine has a silky texture. Some coffee and other mature notes start to show as it sits in the glass. The second and third glasses are off the charts with dense fruit and coffee on the palate and a lingering finish. While I love sharing great wines with others, once in a while I also love drinking the whole bottle of a wine like this by myself. Best example of this wine I’ve had. Staggering plus.

ooooh… an original Louis Gros wine! That’s when the Gros family tree was rather simple in Burgundy! I’ve never even seen one of these! [cheers.gif]
