With expertly prepared Flannery steak and mediocre football:
1985 Mondavi Reserve - Leftovers that I was lucky enough to sample. Light as a feather. leafy. Pure red currant fruit. Not green, yet so light and early-picked. Like a perfectly ripe Loire can franc. Gorgeous, albeit wildly atypical. 12% abv!
1985 Forman Cabernet - flawed. Same flaw as the 1937 Mouton at Berns. Smells like candied orange and tastes citric. What is the flaw? It’s very characteristic.
1985 Dominus - Big, dark, hard wine. Nowhere near ready, if it’ll ever be. Dark purple, youthful color. Dark cassis fruit, graphite, hard bitter tannin. Dead ringer for the angry side of 1986 Bordeaux. Good, but very pissed off - “screw you for opening me, asshole.” By far the ripest, darkest and angriest 1985 Napa cab I’ve ever had.
1991 Robert Chevillon NSG Chaignots - Second bottle of an immaculate lot. Touch of brett, otherwise damn near perfect for what it is. Loads of red fruit and spice. A bit more zesty than Vosne, a bit softer and more feminine than Nuits. Not super concentrated but so light on feet and such pure fruit. I could drink all day.
