TN: 3 Burgs and a Sauternes in Miami

At Michael’s Genuine. Cancelled Milos because they don’t allow corkage and because Michael’s does.

  • 2005 Olivier Leflaive Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (12/6/2013)
A bit of oak front and center, underneath though piercing lemon acidity and minerality. About 7 hours later, oak is still prominent but hints of fruit emerges along with a touch of briny salinity. After about 12 hours of air, this puts on nice weight and developes impressive precision. A nice showing for the vintage and the producer.

  • 1996 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (12/6/2013)
A perfect bottle in a perfect spot. Wonderful spice, earth, sweet fruit, wet leaves, touch of olives and mushroom. Palate is perfectly smooth and balanced. No risk of decline but such a complete experience now.

  • 2008 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (12/6/2013)
Slow ox’ed 3 hours before. Extremely tight and unyielding. After about 5 hours, began to show some primary fruit. This is dark ruby with no signs of the advanced characteristics I experienced with the 1er and Charmes. This needs a lot of time.

  • 2001 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (12/6/2013)
Medium gold in color. Rich tropical fruit, honey, creme brûlée, all balanced by a refreshing swath of acidity. Outright joy to drink now.

Nice wines, and notes. Thanks!

Nice notes on a smart lineup, Fred.

Haven’t had one in a while, but I’ve always liked that '01 Suduiraut and I appreciate the note on Bertheau, too. Haven’t popped mine yet, and don’t plan to for a while.

Have you ever met a newish Bonnes Mares that doesn’t need a lot of time? BM is the Corton of the Côte de Nuits.

Hi Fred,

I made the mistake of cracking a Mag of this wine this summer. What a waste! Tight as a drum and hard as nails. Needs ages yet. I’m hopeful (and have a few of those Mags left for years to come).

Cheers,
Blair

Thanks for the notes!

I thought Michael’s Genuine had a firm two bottle limit?

Like the notes, but really love Michael’s Genuine. Great restaurant, interesting food, etc.

It’s 3. The Corton we sampled throughout the day and finished just before dinner when it started to show really well. We also bought one off the list.

I thought the 08 1er and Charmes were unusually advanced so I wanted to see if the BM from the same source would be similarly affected. I’ll wait at least 15 years before trying another.

Blair, I saw your note but thought it would be worth opening since 1) mine was 750ml and 2) the 1er and Charmes are both drinking very well now. Glad we are in complete agreement!
