My first “discovery” of 2026- and what a great one. Not a producer I am familiar with, but happily Vom Boden delivered a full range to my favorite local wine store- and so hopefully they can become an annual purchase going forward. A real gem- and at a nice price as a lot of long-time favorites continue to approach the $80-100 mark.

bright young lemon color, soaring nose of peach and pear with a top note of dark slate, an abundance of honeysuckle, on the palate succulent and ripe with just a hint of sweetness, exceptional depth and brilliant definition already, peach, pear, a hint of apricot, layers of white flowers, bursting vesicles of ripe and joyous citrus fruits, fine long finish that culminates in a very pure taste of pink grapefruit, a seamless structure holds it all together perfectly, this has ethereal qualities and a deft feel but is very much a full-bodied wine, with time becomes almost punchy with steely slate tones throughout, acids largely buried and quite civilized despite their potency, petrol notes, sensationally good already and a very fine future ahead.
We visited last June with Vollenweider (Moritz). Lovely visit. We did not taste 2024s except one kabinett I believe (that was still cloudy). Here are the pictures I took at the estate:
This is one of my long-time favorites, a consistently great value. There is a Krover Steffensberg that is also very nice, but a little underpowered compared to the Wolfer. Daniel Vollenweider died in 2022, so I am glad to hear that his partner is maintaining the high standard.
Surprised Vollenweider is new to you, Tom. One of my favorites. I have been buying these wines since the 2001 vintage. Don’t have any 2024s, however, as I have tried to stop buying wine! As I have to constantly remind myself.
2001 was the start for me, same as Maureen. Had an amazing visit with Daniel Vollenweider, may he rest in peace, in fall of 2003. It was illuminating to hear him lay out his vision for what he wanted to do at that time.
When it comes wine, Texas can be a great place to be- especially if you love Bordeaux and Burgundy. Even now with distribution more widely spread, we still are a major hub.
Except when it comes to Germany. Anything Skurnik or Wiest- we did okay and so I got started early with Schaefer, Muller, Muller-Catoir and von Schubert. But everything else came later when I started traveling to NY and found Chambers and Crush. So, yes I must admit I still discover new things all the time.
Vom Boden gets the credit for this happening locally (Dallas). We are seeing a whole new world of German wines here thanks to them. I just hope enough fellow fans come along to keep it worthwhile for local stores to keep carrying them. So far, so good as the selection has expanded greatly.
