TN: 2022 Excellent Burgundy Adventure

2022 EXCELLENT BURGUNDY ADVENTURE - Burgundy (10/31/2022-11/6/2022)

Five of us who previously visited Burgundy in 2017 and 2019 planned another excellent adventure. The trip was long overdue due to Covid. We started planning the trip in June and quickly realized that making appointments had become even more challenging. Once again, Francois Mauss to rescue as he helped to secure a couple extremely difficult visits!

Pregame

Prior to departing, RJ kindly hosted a pregame gathering at his place. He generously shared two excellent bottles. Kathleen, RJ's lovely wife, even drove us to the airport.

  • 2018 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (10/31/2022)
Expressive energetic nose displaying decadent yellow citrus fruit, lemon curd, lemon, beeswax, honey, rainwater, toasted sesame/oak, sweet spices and wet stone. Very good concentration, nicely layered sweet yellow fruit, pure, precise and focused, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a medium long succulent yellow citrus fruit driven finish with a hint of saline and sesame at the end. This seems to show more yellow fruit than the previous bottle. The overall impression is similar nevertheless. Not terribly complex as one can expect but very pure and delicious. (92 points)
  • 1989 E. Guigal CĂ´te-RĂ´tie La Landonne - France, RhĂ´ne, Northern RhĂ´ne, CĂ´te-RĂ´tie (10/31/2022)
Absolutely gorgeous complex nose displaying generous black and red fruit, blackberry, black cherry, dry cherry, licorice, strong garrigue, tapenade, grilled fat, tobacco, rare steak and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, very generous and rich yet also fluid and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long rich black and red fruit driven finish with garrige and grilled fat at the end. This expresses everything that we want in a mature Guigal La La. Drinking perfectly. (99 points)

11/1 - Lunch

After an uneventful but tiring trip, we arrived at our lunch restaurant. It was All Saint's Day in France, but we were able to find a nice restaurant. We arrived at 11 and the receptionist wasn't too happy. Luckily the main waiter came out with a big smile. He was very accommodating and let us proceed to drink the 17 DRC Grand Echezeaux.

The duck breast was perfectly cook which is difficult to find in the states.

  • 2017 Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Explosive nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit, blackberry, blackberry concentrate, black cherry, perfume, rose, a hint of stem, licorice, Asian spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of generous opulent black fruit, sensual, rich and fluid, exceptional balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long perfectly ripe black fruit driven finish with perfume and Asian spices at the end. Although youthful, this is a hedonistic wine. (97 points)
  • 2019 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Explosive primary nose displaying unbelievably concentrated ripe black fruit, blackberry concentrated, blackberry jam, licorice, meat, caramel, dark spices and earth. There is no hint of stem, perhaps due to the incredible concentration. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of explosive primary black fruit, rich, sweet and deeply toned, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long concentrated black fruit driven meaty finish with licorice at the end. Although very ripe and concentrated, it retains excellent balance and precision. This is a monster scale Burgundy. (97 points)
  • 2017 Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti La Tâche - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Initially subdued nose and not as expressive as the GE. With about an hour of air, ripe black fruit, blackberry jam, strong DRC stem, perfume, grilled meat, a hint of Vosne spice, dark spices and earth. Excellent concentration, finely layered deeply toned black fruit, rich, dense and oily yet also quite fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long ripe black fruit driven finish with stem and grille meat at the end. This is not as expressive as the GE but the rich yet weightless palate is to die for. This seems deeper and more serious than the 17 GE. Needs time but still enjoyable. (97 points)

11/1 - Dinner at La Maison du Colombier

It is almost a tradition to have our first dinner here. Jamons and saucisson were delicious. The scallops were so sweet.

  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (11/1/2022)
Initially, slightly coiled nose displaying concentrated rich yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, apple, honey, white flowers, a hint of vanilla, sweet spices and strong crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, dense and rich yellow citrus fruit, intense, precise and focused, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long dense yellow fruit driven finish with honey and strong mineral at the end. With about an hour of air, it becomes more expressive, lighter with more white fruit including pear. I highly recommend a couple hours of decanting at this stage. This is a very precise and dense Meursault. (95 points)
  • 2017 Alain Hudelot-NoĂ«llat Richebourg - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Medium expressive nose displaying dense yet sophisticated pure concentrated red fruit, strawberry, rhubarb, rose, beautifully perfumed, sap, a hint of coffee beans, cinnamon and mineral. Excellent concentration, very finely layered pure concentrated red fruit, dense and rich but also sophisticated and elegant, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long pure bright red fruit driven finish with rose and perfume at the end. With air, it becomes more expressive, showing intoxicating perfume. The sophisticate palate to die for which I associate with the great Richebourgs. (97 points)
  • 2014 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Expressive nose displaying generous lush black fruit, blackberry, blackberry jelly, black cherry, a hint of green, oak, dark spices and earth. Excellent concentration, chunky concentrate black fruit, rich and generous, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long ripe black fruit driven finish with a hint of green and oak at the end. A couple guys mentioned that it expresses like an Oregon Pinot. Most folks are disappointed. It is a concentrated and somewhat modern style of wine. At least based on this example, I have enjoyed the domaine’s wines in the past but I don’t understand the current craze for Arnoux-Lachaux’s wines. (94 points)
  • 2017 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Beautifully perfumed nose displaying generous sweet red fruit with a hint of black, raspberry and strawberry, a hint of black cherry, sap, a hint of stem, rose and strong mineral. Excellent concentration, very finely layered sweet red fruit, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long generous red fruit driven floral finish. With air, it becomes lighter and more perfumed. Despite being very youthful, it is drinking beautifully. (96 points)
  • 2018 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru (11/1/2022)
Intense very primary nose displaying super concentrated rich black fruit, blackberry concentrated, black cherry, roasted meat, a hint of licorice, dark spices and earth. Unbelievably concentrated, layers upon layers of intense primary black fruit, super rich and oily, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long intense primary black fruit driven meaty finish. Although very primary, almost barrel sample like, the upfront opulent sweet black fruit makes this wine immensely enjoyable. (97 points)

11/1 - Nighcaps at Le Cep

We returned to Le Cep and drank a couple more bottles.

Jamet that we opened and carried out from La Maison du Colombier.

From Le Cep's overpriced and pedestrian wine list.

  • 2013 Domaine Jamet CĂ´te-RĂ´tie - France, RhĂ´ne, Northern RhĂ´ne, CĂ´te-RĂ´tie (11/1/2022)
A textbook Jamet nose displaying beautiful subtle red and black fruit, strawberry, black cherry, strong pepper, garrigue, tapenade, tobacco, rose, cinnamon, nutmeg and mineral. Very good concentration, finely layered sweet red fruit, silky and fluid, medium acidity, strong mineral and a seamless long subtle red fruit driven finish with black pepper and garrigue at the end. This is so smooth and expressive. Quite complex and so delicious. (96 points)
  • 2014 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (11/1/2022)
Expressive but a bit straightforward nose displaying concentrated black fruit, blackberry jam, black cherry, a hint of green, leather, dark spices and earth. Very good concentration, packed slightly chunky black fruit, generous but a bit angular, medium acidity, earthy mineral, slightly coarse tannins, and a medium to long ripe black fruit driven finish. Perhaps a few more years of cellaring with help resolve tannins and add complexity via sous bois. (91 points)

11/2 - Lunch at Rotisserie du Chambertin

The restaurant that I thought I made a reservation at was closed. The proprietor told us that he had never opened on Wednesday since he started twenty some years ago. Our incredibly capable driver Sonia was able to reserve a table at Rotisserie du Chambertin. The cooking was good.

Lunch wines

  • 2019 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (11/2/2022)
Incredibly focused nose displaying slightly coiled yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, apple, coche like flint, honeysuckle, rainwater, spicy spices and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, slightly coiled yellow citrus fruit, incredible energy and precision, mouth puckering acidity and mineral, and a long pure yellow citrus fruit driven finish with flint and crushed rocks at the end. With air, it shows a bit of Chevalier Montrachet like elegance. Decanting for an hour or two is recommended. (96 points)
  • 2019 Domaine PrieurĂ© Roch Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru Les Suchots - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru (11/2/2022)
I always wanted to try the domaine’s wine. Expressive “natural” wine nose displaying concentrated black fruit, blackberry jam, maraschino cherries, animal, stem, Vosne spices, cinnamon, lavender and earth. We all finds very Beaujolais like “animal” expression in a good way. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, rich and generous, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish. This is the first very “natural” wine from Burgundy for me. I would love to retaste in a decade. (93 points)
  • 2014 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru (11/3/2022)
Initially subdued nose displaying very ripe red fruit, strawberry, dry cherry, a hint of stem and sous bois, cinnamon and earth. Justin thinks VA but I don’t detect. It becomes more expressive with air, becoming very floral. Very good concentration, slightly coiled dry red fruit, dense and deeply toned, good acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long ripe red fruit driven earthy finish. (94 points)

11/2 - Frederic Mugnier

We were led by M. Mugnier. The 21s were excellent, mostly pure red fruit driven, showing very good concentration and approachability. It was fascinating to compare the 20 and 21 Chambolle Village and Nuits St. Georges. Coming from the same vineyards, the 20s were black fruit driven where the 21S were red.

  • 2021 Jacques-FrĂ©dĂ©ric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny (11/2/2022)

  • 2003 Jacques-FrĂ©dĂ©ric Mugnier Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (11/2/2022)
Served blind generously by M. Mugnier. Showing sous bois, a bit straightforward, generous black fruit, a hint of fruitcake and earth. The palate is silky and fluid. My guess is a 20 year old Chambolle village or Marechale. There is a slight hint of the 03 overripe expression. (93 points)

11/2 - Le Musigny vineyard visit

After the visit to Mugnier, Justin and I wanted to visit Marchand-Tawse's walled Musigny vineyard. There was a lot of grapes in the vineyard of Vogue.

We came up with a crazy idea to randomly show up and ask for a visit at Marchard-Tawse. Initially, we couldn't find a place to park so we made a loop. When we came back, a gentleman was closing the doors. Justin struck a conversation and asked for a visit.... to Pascal Marchand, the man himself. He asked us to come back on Friday. We were all pleasantly surprised and started to giggle with joy.

11/2 - Dinner at L'HĂ´tel de Beaune

Kelly and I have known Laurent V for the twenty years. I don't know anyone who has drank as many old wines as Laurent. He lives and breathes wine. He was on his way back from Jura to Geneve. We corresponded via email and decided to dine at L'Hotel de Beaune. Something really strange happened. When I checked the wine lists about a few days prior, the prices were very attractive. The day before, the prices were increased significantly. Nevertheless, Laurent was able to find nice bottles at decent prices.

Beautifully cooked cote de bœuf

Dinner Wines

We ended up at American Bar. This was a new spot which is run by a young couple. They curated an incredible list of bourbons. As you can imagine, the prices were high. Laurent ordered the 11 Auslese which was a great deal.

We walked back to our hotel.

11/3 - Clos de Tart

This was a last minute arrangement and we had an appointment at Faiveley so the visit was rather short. Alessandro greeted us. He took over the wine making responsibilities in 2019. His emphasis is on finesse without too much extraction. He introduced the Morey St. Dens village to further improve the quality. It was quite evident in the 21 Clos de Tart Which displayed intoxicating perfume and beautiful finesse.

11/3 - Faiveley

I corresponded with Erwan to request the visit. Erwan was spending time with his family, so we were received by Mathilde. She was very knowledgeable, super friendly and engaging. We tried a lot of the 21s. I am a big fan of Faiveley wines year in and year out. The wines are excellent and en par with the top domains but without the exorbitant prices. We all thought the 21s at Faiveley were excellent.

11/3 - Lunch at Castel de Tres Girard

Soon after we were seated, Anthony Hanson came in. I met Anthony almost twenty years ago when we both stayed at Chateau D'Yquem. We were scheduled to be there for three nights but got kicked out after one night as Bernard Arnault came to stay and he didn't want any guests.

I ran into Anthony again at L'Arche Des Vins, wine bar, two nights later.

11/3 - Rousseau

We were greeted by Cyrielle and her beautiful petite border collie. Rousseau made exceptional 21s. What I noticed the most is how exceptional "The Other" wines were, i.e. beyond "The Top Four". I also felt that the wines were slightly less developed than the Faiveleys.

11/4 - Lunch at Le Millesime

My first time here. The restaurant was surprisingly big and spacious. The chef uses Indian spices generously. It certainly deserves the one star. I noticed a large frame man walking in and sitting in the next table. He looked awfully familiar. There aren’t too many big people in Burgundy. It occurred to me that he was Dominique Laurent, the 200% new oak fame. I walked to the table and introduced myself. Luckily, he was with his importer to Singapore, as he doesn’t speak much English. I found out that he doesn’t have an importer in the States. We exchanged contact information for a future visit.

Wines

  • 2019 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru MontĂ©e de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (11/4/2022)
Expressive nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, pineapple, golden delicious, lemon curd, a hint of petrol, white pepper, saline, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered opulent yellow fruit, rich and ripe but also nicely balanced, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of petrol at the end. Exceptional concentration, unbelievably layered, dense and rich but also pure, energetic and focused, perfect precision, bright acidity, strong rocky mineral, and the finish that resonates easily over a minute that is not unlike a Chevalier Montrachet. This is a very special and unique wine. (97 points)

11/4 - Meo Camuzet

Although I am a big fan of Meo Camuzet wines, this was the first time I visited the domaine. The tasting was conducted by the man himself, Jean-Nicolas Meo. We tasted the 21s that were bottled. The wines clearly displayed the domaine style, i.e. generous, mostly black fruit driven and very polished. I was really impressed by the 18 and 21 Brulees.

Caves Madeleine

This was a mini La Paulee dinner organized by David P. Since we didn't have any wines to contribute, we ordered from the list. Caves Madeleine is known for the wine list that put emphasis on organic and bio wines. The label drinkers that we are, we weren't too crazy about the list and the prices were a bit high for Beaune.

11/5 - Domaine Buisson - Charles

It is difficult to find Buisson-Charles wines in the States. I corresponded with Patrick Essa and we were able to secure a visit. He explained his wine making philosophy which is almost no intervention. He picks much later than other domaines. He hand picks and sorts the fruit at the vineyards. He is incredibly detailed oriented and meticulous. He uses the best natural cork that is made out of two pieces. I believe the cork costs him $3 per piece but he uses them for all of his wines from Aligote to Chevalier Montrachet. I thought the 21s were excellent, i.e. pure, generous and energetic.

He kindly poured from 2021 and 2020. I prefer the fresh expression of the 21 over the richness of the 20.

11/5 - Musigny at Le Cep

I corresponded with Neal Martin. Luckily Neal was free and was able to join us. The last time I met up with Neal was in DC over a decade ago.

Birdie opened his lone bottle of the 15 Marchand Tawse's Le Musigny.

  • 2015 Domaine Tawse Musigny - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru (11/5/2022)
Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying perfect ripe pure black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, a hint of cherry, licorice, expression bean, floral perfume, sap, grilled cep and limestone. Exquisite palate, incredibly layered concentrated black fruit, rich and sweet but perfectly balanced and beautifully detailed, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long pure black fruit driven finish with licorice and perfume at the end. This has the weightless texture of the textbook Musigny. Very speical wine. (99 points)

11/5 - Dinner at L'expression

This was a steak house. I believe the chef worked at L'HĂ´tel de Beaune and the menu is similar, i.e. roasted Bresse chicken, steak and etc. The wine list was a bit expensive for Beaune.

  • 2019 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (11/5/2022)
Expressive nose displaying rich concentrated yellow citrus fruit with a hint of white, flint, sesame, cream, sweet spices and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow fruit, rich and oily, excellent balance and precision, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long concentrate yellow fruit driven mineral finish. Excellent showing. (96 points)
  • 2014 Domaine de Montille Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru (11/5/2022)
Expressive nose displaying generous sweet black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, strawberry, stem, a hint of Vosne spice and sous bois, light caramel and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of generous black fruit, rich yet silky and precise, excellent balance and detail, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long generous black fruit driven finish with a hint of stem at the end. This clearly expresses the top end Vosne terroir. It is a serious wine yet super delicious. (96 points)
  • 2014 Domaine de Montille Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Vosne-RomanĂ©e 1er Cru (11/5/2022)
Beautiful complex nose displaying rich concentrated black fruit, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, sap, more developed sous bois, floral perfume, dark spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of rich concentrated black fruit, rich yet silky and fluid, beautiful balance and detail, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long generous black fruit driven finish with a hint of sap at the end. It is fascinating to compare with the regular cuvee. This developed a bit more sous bois and slightly richer. Overall, I find them very similar. If you wish to try a textbook high end Vosne, this will be an excellent choice. (97 points)

11/5 - Night cap at L'Arche des Vins

Despite being a Saturday night, most of the places were closed. We searched a wine bar via internet and this was a great choice. A young sommelier was in awe of Neal's presence. Deja vu!, Anthony Hanson walked in. He really hasn't changed in the past two decades. Neal and our crew had a blast talking about all things wine and then some.

We walked close to the Hospice and bid farewell to Neal, one of the nicest and fun wine critics to spend time with.

Wines

  • 2012 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne (11/5/2022)
Expressive nose displaying rich concentrated yellow fruit, lemon curd, baked apple, light caramel, crème brulee, brioche, smoke, cinnamon and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated opulent yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and deeply toned but also very excellent precision and balance, and a long opulent rich yellow citrus fruit driven finish with smoke at the end. This has to be the most concentrated young Cristal going back to the 90. (97 points)
  • 1993 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Roncières - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (11/5/2022)
Neal found this off the eclectic list. Fully mature nose displaying thin dry red fruit, remnant of strawberry jam, mint, strong sous bois, dirty damp cellar and earth. Very light body at this point, a hint of red fruit, thin and lean, medium acidity and mineral, still showing austere tannins and a medium to short finish. It is past its prime but interesting to try nevertheless as the 93 is one of my favorite Burgundy vintage. It is fascinating to note that the tn from 2009 also points out the wine being austere. (88 points)
  • 2009 Domaine PrieurĂ© Roch Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (11/5/2022)
Great minds think alike. After tasting the 19 Les Suchots, Justin is curious as how Prieure Roch wines age. The nose is starting to show maturity, a bit more evolved than the similar 2009 crus. Mature red fruit, strawberry, cherry pie, developed sous bois, expresso bean, rose, dark spices and limestone. There still is a hint of Beaujolais/natural wine. Very good concentration, generous forward red fruit, rich and slightly chewy, bright acidity and medium mineral, and a medium to long generous red fruit driven earthy finish. There is a hint of bitterness. I like hot this has developed, getting closer to the red burgundy expression that I am used to. (92 points)

11/6 - Lunch

RJ never does anything halfway. We changed to a bit larger vehicle returning to Paris. Clearly Justin, aka Wookie, was really tired.

We stopped by at an old school French restaurant for our last meal.

Wines

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut RosĂ© - France, Champagne (11/6/2022)
Fully mature complex nose displaying slightly dry yellow and red fruit, dry apricot, peach, raspberry soda, cooper, smoke, grilled cep and crushed rocks. There is a hint of Amontillado sherry note which is pleasing. Fully mature palate, nicely layered generous mature yellow and red fruit, beautifully detailed and harmonious, medium fine generous mousse, bright acidity, strong wet rock mineral, and a seamless long finish with copper and sherry at the end. Although it clear expresses a nutty dry sherry note, it is not overwhelming, and the oxidative note is not too pronounced. This is a classic bottle of Selosse Rose that is drinking beautifully. (96 points)
  • 2015 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (11/6/2022)
Expressive nose displaying incredibly concentrated ripe yellow fruit, peach, apple, honey, cream, sweet spices and strong mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated sweet yellow fruit, rich and oily but also beautifully detailed and balanced, medium acidity and strong mineral, and a long rich ripe yellow fruit driven finish with honey at the end. It expresses the 15 richness and although only showing medium acidity, the strong mineral expression provides nice balance. (95 points)
  • 2017 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru MontĂ©e de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (11/6/2022)
Medium expressive nose displaying pure delicate white fruit with a hint of yellow, apple, pear, lemon curd, strong mint, honeysuckle, cool mountain stream, saline and limestone. Surprisingly delicate palate, subtle pure white fruit, cool, pure, bright acidity, medium mineral, and a medium long white fruit driven finish with strong mint at the end. This is surprisingly light and delicate. With air, it remains delicate. Perhaps it needs a few more years of cellaring to gain weight but I am not certain. (93 points)
  • 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (11/6/2022)
Excellent appearance. Medium expressive complex nose displaying fully mature black and red fruit, black cherry, strawberry, sap, rose, leather, sous bois, raw cep, caramel, cinnamon and earth. Excellent concentration very finely layered mature black and red fruit, silky and harmonious, perfect amount of acidity, earthy mineral, and a long ripe black fruit driven finish with sous bois and leather at the end. This is a powerful but slightly rustic showing. If plan to open now, it should be served in a small gathering and enjoy over a few hours. (95 points)
  • 2015 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (11/6/2022)
Expressive nose displaying youthful black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, a hint of strawberry, strong iron, grilled cep, black truffle and limestone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, very precise and focused, perfect amount of acidity and strong iron mineral, fine tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with iron at the end. This is a classic Roumier BM, i.e. iron, ripe and structured, an iron fist in a velvet glove. FYI, this needs another two decades to reach the peak. (97 points)
  • 2010 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, RhĂ´ne, Southern RhĂ´ne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/6/2022)
How lucky can I be to try this monumental wine twice in this trip. Explosive nose displaying intense super concentrated black fruit, blackberry concentrated, black cherry, licorice, garrigue, tapenade, cinnamon and nutmeg, strong tobacco, smoked meat, lavender and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense concentrated black fruit, rich and deeply toned but also beautifully detailed and perfectly balanced, bright acidity, strong crushed rock mineral, and the finish that never ends. This is simply a perfect expression of Rayas, so unique and so perfect. (100 points)

11/6 - Airport Hotel

We were way too exhausted to head out in Paris. We ordered pizza and burgers at the hotel and drank the remaining bottles.

  • 1997 Penfolds Grange - Australia, South Australia (11/6/2022)
Crumbling cork. Expressive nose displaying very ripe black fruit, blackberry liqueur, blackberry jam, strong licorice, a hint of petrol, smoked meat, eucalyptus, garrigue, dark spices earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, rich and unctuous, medium acidity and mineral, and a long very ripe concentrated black fruit driven finish with a hint of smoke at the end. As expected, very concentrated and ripe. If you like the ripe and concentrated Aussie wines, your rating may be a few points higher. (94 points)
  • 2018 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (11/6/2022)
Expressive nose displaying tropical yellow fruits, pineapple, peach, a hint of flint and oak, honey, creme brulee, cream and limestone. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated sweet tropical fruit, rich and oily, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long concentrated ripe yellow fruit driven finish with caramel at the end. Kelly informs that Kistler has toned down on the oak usage in the past decade and it is evident. It is still very tropical nevertheless. (93 points)
  • 2014 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (11/6/2022)
This has matured showing riper yellow fruit. Fully mature nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, lemon curd, apple, a hint of flint, oak, caramel, cream, crackerjack, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated warm yellow fruit, generous and warm, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish. This is showing all yellow fruits now. No need to wait. (94 points)

Tasting and drinking at 10 am (5 am eastern time), until midnight everyday has its challenges. We did our best to keep our manimal spirits high. Some of us fell a bit short here and there but we marched on. This was another excellent and memorable adventure. It is always a privilege to share these moments with the great friends!

I don’t think I took a breath as I read this. Crazy and not a single corked wine. A lifetime of wines.

Pretty much the same response.

Thanks for sharing and Bravo!

I’d love to join just for one of those days but even keeping up for one day could be difficult for me.

Outstanding! Thank you for sharing.

I believe a lot of wineries use DIAM.

Absolutely beautiful notes and an amazing trip.
I had the following out of the bottle with Christine at the Domaine. The only time I will ever drink it most likely. Your note sums it up.

  • 2019 Jean-Claude Ramonet Montrachet - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru (11/5/2022)
Exquisite nose displaying perfectly ripe noble white fruit, pear, apple, honeysuckle, smoked tea and limestone. The palate is perfect in everyway, pure, precise, energetic, fresh and harmonious, perfect amount of acidity and unbelieverably fine mineral, and the seamless finish that never ends. This is like Bach’s cello concerto, deepest deepness and lightest lightness coexist. This is a life altering wine. (100 points)

Kevin, as always you are our faithful scribe. Thank you for taking all the notes. A herculean effort. We definitely went to 11 this time.
With all the amazing visits on this trip, I have to say Pascal Marchand at Marchand Tawes was probably one of the most fun visits I have ever done. His on-the-fly barrel blending was crazy! The sprawling cellars were like a visit to the Willie Wonka chocolate factory, and we all had a golden ticket.
Hanging with Neal Martin was pretty awesome. The last time we met was at a lunch at Chateau Le Gay hosted by Catherine Pere-Verge years ago. I was quite surprised that he remembered me. Very cool guy.
My big picture takeaway on this trip is that 2021 is a really good vintage for reds, but unfortunately there is so very little wine. In past visits to Rousseau, the barrels would be stacked 2 high. Almost the whole barrel room was single barrel racked. It seemed across the board, the domaines were excited about the abundant and high quality 2022 crop.
I liked the Buisson-Charles wines more than Kevin did. Patrick was very interesting. When we first arrived, it was like knocking on the castle door in the Wizard of Oz. I was expecting him to yell “go away” when he opened the door. He really warmed up once he got into it though. Having Sonia with us was a real plus.
It was fantastic to be back in the saddle again and it will be hard to ever top this trip.

So is that “walled vineyard” that makes that adorable little barrel of Musigny just those two or three little rows in that sliver in the pic? Cool.

:flushed: :flushed: :flushed:

I found amusing the repeated comments, “The prices are a bit high for Beaune” when talking about the restaurants. Prices a bit high? For the wines you are consuming I don’t think relative value scale applies. I salute your fortitude and endurance, but I could not (and probably would not) consume so many of these pinnace wines in such a short time, and at such an early age.

Seriously, did not a fair degree of palate fatigue set in and alter the experience? I know I am not the only one thinking this after reading your quite detailed and heroic descriptions of the trip.

Congratulations jeune hommes!

Thanks Kevin for the time putting these very fine notes together. Awesome wines

The relative value scale does apply for those who want to find good prices in Beaune. For me, great young wines provide a great deal of pleasure and show glimpses of what they will become one day. The opportunities to try the high end Burgundies at reasonable prices are quickly vanishing. When we have the opportunity, we do not pass. Spending a week away from our families and work, our approach is unapologetically excessive.

I also liked the Buisson-Charles a lot. Pascal is one of a kind.

What and where was the best lunch/meal on 11/5?

Thanks for the fun, detailed and informative notes Kevin. From your descriptions, it sounds like 2021 vintage is quite a success. Do you have a view on where it sits cf the other recent vintages?

I love the 17, very pure and expressive, the 18s and 20s were ripe, concentrated and black fruit driven, 19 and 21 were slightly less ripe, equally concentrated and more red fruit driven. This is purely based on this trip.
