TN: 2022 Cascina Fontana Langhe Nebbiolo (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC)

Haven’t seen Cascina Fontana talked about here much but in our small Finnish circles there is hype and a German retailer seems to sell their annual allocation extremely fast. Despite LasseK’s encouragement to ”check the website frequently” I’ve been lazy so the wines have not been available to me in retail. I’ve had some of them in restaurants in Helsinki and enjoyed tremendously. They’re elegant, classically proportioned and extremely drinkable even in their youth. As some of the wines were recently listed in the local monopoly I pulled the trigger immediately. This one was supposed to be a 2021 but as Otto’s note on that was not all praise I didn’t mind and now I do even less.

Plenty of truffle and gentle spiciness on the nose along with attractive, brightly ripe red cherries, tar and some leather. Really nice and detailed aromatics. On the palate easy on the entry with the tannins emerging quickly and tightening their grip gradually towards the finish. More structure than on the average Langhe Nebbiolo, this gives off rather serious vibes without being overly stern. There is a sense of elegance to it and great brightness to the fruit but regardless it makes one absolutely crave for food. A bite of Neapolitan pizza takes the edge of and makes it drink alarmingly easily for its 14% ABV. There’s certain warm year headiness here but this is clearly really well made.

Great producer! I love their 2016 Barolo. Not much makes it to Massachusetts so its not really visible here. Tradationalist all the way!!!

Besides a few strange 2015 Barolo from Cascina Fontana, I loved every other bottle I’ve tasted from the domaine. Just classic lifted aromatic Nebbiolo.
