TN: 2019 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel

  • 2019 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/18/2022)
    Glassware: Zalto Universal
    Prep: Pop n' pour

Concentrated sunshine in a glass. Somewhat austere on the nose, mostly ripe pear with some whiffs of lemon/lime spritz. Glides across the palate with flavors of pear, candied lime peel, minty herbs, honey, and vanilla cream. Fresh acidity lingers on a long finish, complemented by the honeyed fruit notes and some subtle slate minerals. While mouthcoating, the wine is marked by a delicate and buoyant mouthfeel I particularly enjoy that makes me come back for sip after sip.

I didn't taste this wine immediately on release, and I'm sure it was more expressive then, but I can see this will be a special auslese with age. The challenge will be keeping my hands off my remaining 3 bottles. (95 points)

I think the 2019s are generally starting to close down.

I’m sure they are. As are the 2020s I’ve tried lately.

The few 2020s I have had in the last couple of months have still been quite open (including one this weekend). But we are getting to the time where they will likely be getting less friendly.

Popping '19 GKA?! I must have time warped to 2050.

At Steinmetz pricing I don’t mind opening a bottle early for science

Young Auslese can be a luscious treat! It’s good to drink a few young.

Sounds yummy, Brian.
I poured 16 Steinmetz 2020 Rieslings on Thursday, and two red 2019s.
None were closed down, and all of them showed really really well, in the elegant and precise style of the vintage.
For Gold Kapsule wines, the '20 Juffer-Sonnenuhr GK Spat and '20 Neumagener Rosengartchen GKA were absolutely delicious, and I followed both over the next few days. Soo delicious and balanced…

Thanks for the great note. I don’t know why but I don’t think German rieslings shut down as hard as they once did.

They can and are. But if you only have 4 bottles it seems like a fool’s errand especially from a vintage like '19. That’s how you end up like all those people who already drank through all their '01 GKA and auction wines.

Maybe only four bottles of that wine, but sacrificing one is no big deal.

As for drinking through everything, they clearly didn’t buy enough. (insert white wine emoji here)
