No aversion whatsoever, just a weird circumstance in my wine life:
I could resolve the issue right now by going online and ordering one (or six). Yet, for some reason, I don’t. I think in a masochistic and convoluted way, I’m semi-consciously preventing myself to do-so. I always thought I was a simple-minded fool but it turns out I might be either defective or of less simple mind than I thought.
There’s all kinds of talk about how these wines age, but my supplies never seem to last long enough to get anywhere close to acquiring anything resembling age, because they are so attractive to me young (and because most recent Chablis vintages have been disappointing). I did recently buy some 2010 le Mont sec, which is very good, but i’m not sure it’s “better” than recent releases.
For me, I love acidity and “laser”-like focus, so softness, or softening of the wines with age isn’t really something I’m seeking. The wines do seem to fill out over the initial few years (thinking in particular 21–maybe 19 as well), so a tiny bit of age seems to help my early drinking habit.
The ‘10s have been drinking fabulously the last few years. Love their balance. But I’ve no doubt they are up for the long haul for the patient. Really Pinguet’s last vintage and a wonderful swan song.
In reality, due to actuarial realities, I need to stop thinking in decades for Huet, but old habits (here, cellaring Huet for the long haul) are hard to break.
I would hold for decades if I had the patience - and if I hadnt bought my older bottles at auction. I also dont have enough, need to stop buying riesling and buy more Huet
I don’t have much experience with Huet, but I’ve drank a few Kiralyudvar Tokaji Furmint Sec (with some age on it), which is owned by the same group that owns Huet now. Several CT notes have indicated they see a resemblance. These mostly seem in the $20-$30 range on WS. Maybe worth a try?
Yes, I suppose similar ballparks on many structural dimensions. I haven’t loved the Kiralyudvar Furmints, but I also have not had a ton. Always something to keep in mind!
