2019 Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône (Le Poutet) - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (10/13/2021)
This is one of those wonderful wines that delivers a drinking experience well above its price point. It’s really more a baby Chateauneuf than “merely” a Côtes du Rhône, and brings the full flavors of cherry, earth, wild herbs and sun-soaked stone to life. It has some brightness on the palate, even though it finishes with a kirsch and olive bass note. So darned satisfying, and only a $20-$25 wine.

Yes generally really excellent stuff! I’ll be taking delivery of my 2019s soon, almost shipping weather. Thanks for the note, David.
Laurent knows very well the quality of it’s Cote du Rhone and doesn’t consider it inferior to it’s Chateauneuf, for him it is just another appellation with it’s own quality… Also we did a vertical of it’s cote du rhone with him and finished by tasting a CDR 1996 at 20 years of age… and guess what, it was still perfectly fresh and delicious!!
When I am there, Laurent frequently likes to mess with me by making me taste some wines blind. Although if one put two bottles in front of me and told me one was the CdP and one the Cdr, I could probably choose correctly, when I taste completely blind, if the wine is more than 5 or so years old, I regularly guess wrong. And, indeed, I have tasted some of his CdRs from the 90s and from supposedly lesser years and they have been great. One can tell the age from the color but rarely from the nose or the palate.
