Luke, good place to start and continue from there! I won’t forget visiting Pierre Gonon, Jean was traveling and Pierre proved a wonderful host, in 2015. Such amazing wines loaded with finesse and terroir. They are amazing stewards. We were able to buy some wines before we left and I’ll just say they didn’t cost nearly what we spend here in the States. Part of what I find endearing about folks like Gonon and Allemand (direct purchase and found in shops around Paris as well), these are producers who don’t set such high prices from the outset. Folks like Kermit Lynch, distributors, retailers and flippers put them in the stratosphere. For some more budget friendly Northern Rhone, don’t miss Faury, Graillot, V. Paris, F Balthazar. Obviously there are expensive wines on offer with these producers but plenty of solid well priced drinkers too!

How would you compare these two Gonons and the 2015?
I’ve only had the 16 once, closer to release, and it was fairly tight, tough, unyielding. I’d bet on it being a long haul wine, and haven’t thought about trying one. 2015 drank easily from the get go, and I assume is still drinking well. Drank a lot of 2014 early on, when it was easily available and affordable. It’s a unique, savory, delicious outlier that I’d be happy to drink every day if I could.

Hi David, I agree with Alan on the 15. More like 18. I also agree with Alan on the 14, that’s been one of my favorite recent vintages in Northern Rhone. A very aromatic, fresh vintage. Since then we have had a string of very ripe vintages, maybe 2021 excepted. The 2021 was a reset.
