Pouring the 18 Bloom’s blind this Saturday night and of course will post notes on the event.
Pouring the 18 Bloom’s Saturday night with my friend who owns them. Are you thinking more than 5 hour decant?
Of the single vineyard cuvees, I think Memorious needs the least time (typically, though 2018 has been an exception as it needs a lot of air), followed by Bloom’s Field. I think the Bloom’s Field will do well with 5 hours, but will continue to open up after that and hold well all day. These wines are built to cellar for a long time and I have yet to have a bottle of any of them where the last glass after a long day was not the best. I would also say that despite long decants, I have yet to have a La Cote or Sous La Chene from any vintage that I thought was drinking optimally (I started with the 2016 vintages so my check-ins have all amounted to infanticide). The only possible exception is an incredible 2016 La Cote that I decanted for 8 hours recently. It was the WOTN in a blind tasting with a large group. One last thing – I really don’t think you can compare these wines to Burgundy based on taste. They do not taste exactly like wine made from Burgundian soil and I have seen Raj say this. Rather – I believe he says they are made with Burgundian techniques and style (whole cluster, high acidity, low brix, oak regimen). John – if ever there was a Pinot made for the 3-day wine review – I sure would be interested in the results here, especially with the La Cote and Sous La Chene cuvees (SLC comes from a smaller parcel of La Cote).
Yes, the last time I opened it, I felt it needed more time. Try decanting first thing in the morning.
Advice taken.
