TN: 2016 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Kestener Paulinsberg Riesling Spätlese Goldkapse

Seeing if this still works. From Sunday night.

[list][*]2016 Weingut Günther Steinmetz Kestener Paulinsberg Riesling Spätlese Goldkapsel - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/14/2022)
Nose of petrol and ripe citrus. Uber-ripe tropical flavors are buffered by pure, cool, slate essence. It is clean and elegant with bright, refreshing acidity, but also juicy and heady. RIch umami flavors pull you back for more. Terrific. Youthful

I love Steinmetz. I don’t see many notes around these parts. Nice wine and note, sounds delicious! Thanks!

I’m a fairly new convert via Fass. House seems to be going from strength to stronger. A good thing. Cheers.

Steinmetz has been very good for a while (though they are really on a run now), but US distribution has been spotty and changes every year or two. Maybe Fass will have them for a while.

A year or so ago (maybe longer…COVID compresses time) I reached out to their “official” importer (Broadbent) and basically got told they were not interested in helping me find the wines. Glad Fass (and Panzer) are bringing them in now.

Broadbent is not even listing them any more on their webpage, and they were a year ago (or sometime during covid), since I used to be able to access their tech shhets there I guess they are now only in the hands of Fass and Panzer.

I’m staging an 18 wine tasting of his 2020s in mid September, fwiw. Also the full 2021 offer will be out in a few days…
I can honestly say that his wines over the past 3 years are the best of his career.
They’re very very undervalued/recognized.
That will continue to change.
Sorry for the typos, the formatting of the new site makes it impossible to see the first line, or to edit it. (At least on my android phone)

Other than Lyle and Robert, Stefan is imported by Cork Horder which is a new company by Bryan Garcia who used to work at Grand Cru Selections where Steinmetz was few importers ago.

I tell every German producers do NOT go with an importer that does not have a strong German book as it never works! They just don’t understand they think being the only German wine in a book is a good thing. Selling German wine is an entirely different sell than other regions. And so far this does not look to be going well as I don’t see the wines anywhere.

This is quite the futures offer!
Thanks for the info, Robert :clinking_glasses:

Steinmetz is excellent, and would be better known if the wines were better distributed. Looking forward to purchasing some from Robert in the near future (Lyle does not currently ship to MA).

I am sure there are others, but Steinmetz seems uniquely susceptible to fall into this trap. I think there were with Grand Cru as importers (no current German portfolio), then they were with Broadbent (currently only two German estates), no Cork Hoarder where they are the only German. They don’t seem to learn (but I am glad they are also being imported by Fass and Panzer).
