TN: 2016 Thibaud Boudignon Anjou à Françoise

2016 Thibaud Boudignon Anjou à Françoise… - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou (8/14/2022)
Pretty classic Chenin nose, a little savory, a little waxy, promises of the lovely fruit to come on the palate; and such a beautifully rich, flavorful palate, some nice savory notes, just a hint of saline, good acidity to provide some bite and a touch of tart balance. Not the minerality sometimes found in Boudignon wines, but so tasty and just gluggable. Lasting finish that just lingers and lingers. (92 pts.)

A great vigneron who makes lovely wines, including this one! Thanks for the note.

I like the wines but had this 2013 a few weeks ago. Great nose, but there was a real lack of intensity in the flavour profile which got completely out muscled by the acidity. In the end it was just a very sour experience that noone at the table liked (and i am an acidity freak…) I hope it is just the vintage.

I’ve found that to be a description of a lot of 13 Loire Chenin

I guess you are right. Was just a little disappointed as i was pretty excited to taste Boudignon with a little age. I will just wait patiently on my 2017-19’s

I had the same experience with Guiberteau in 13

I have the same experience with every Guiberteau no matter the vintage - sour.

Yes 2013 was difficult in the Loire; generally dismal reds and many whites are as described, the acidity a major feature of the palate, with not much else to cushion it. If you can find any of Anjou’s sweet wines they are worth a punt though; that acidity works well there. Patrick Baudouin’s 2013 Quarts de Chaume Les Zersilles is a good example.

Thanks for the note! Definitely excited about this producer based on what little I’ve tried. Seems like the prices are trendings upwards.

Regarding the 2013 Chenins I really loved Taille aux Loups’s Montlouis Remus in that vintage.

I think 2013 was tougher toward the Anjou than in the Touraine. Vouvray and Montlouis had OK balance near release but maybe next year will be a good time to revisit—10 year tasting.

It’s just the vintage.

Thanks for your note, Alan!
