TN: 2016 Domaine Jean Royer Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige

2016 Domaine Jean Royer Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige

I’ve only had 1 other CdP from this producer and that was the 2001. Not decanted and the last glass had some sediment. 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre from South and Southwest facing vineyards. 2016 was an excellent vintage in the Southern Rhone but this wine was not representative. Dark purple color. Creamy texture with a sweet upfront approach. Notes of plum, cocoa powder and iron. Integrated tannins at 10 years old. Drink now. 84 points.

I have not been thrilled with their wines either, albeit from a small sample set. I could not keep the various bottlings straight.
