TN: 2015 Château Grand Mayne - Filia de Grand Mayne (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru)

2015 Château Grand Mayne Filia de Grand Mayne - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (12/18/2020)
– decanted one hour before initial taste –
– tasted one glass over one hour on Day 1; re-visited on Day 2 –

Day 1: dark-fruited and oaky (quite different than the blind bottle from a few weeks ago, which showed more restrained and less oaky).

Day 2: fruitier and more mineral with less oak on the Nose than Day 1 – better today. On the palate, the oak is drawing back a bit today, but still there; still dark fruited, and a touch savory; this clearly benefits from air or age.

Excellent QPR @ $30.

Relatively modest wines like this can offer great value and pleasure. I still have a bit of the 1995 Grand Mayne and it continues to please.

Absolutely. I discovered this in a blind tasting, where everyone (myself included) thought it excellent; this subsequent bottle was a good amount off that first showing, but still good enough to make me quite happy about the half case purchase. [cheers.gif]

2015 Château Grand Mayne Filia de Grand Mayne - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (8/15/2026)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind in a restaurant setting over approx. 2 hrs. –
– brief TN from memory –

Dark-fruited, and in a nice spot right now — likely its youthful peak. Relaxed, with gentle tannins. Certainly on the bigger side, but the oak isn’t as prominent as it was a few years ago (2021). Acidity is medium-low. Quite frankly, showing as well as one could reasonably expect from this bottling, at this age, from this vintage. Very good. Drink or Hold.

Love reading this. I took a tour group to this château a couple of weeks ago, tasting a couple of recent vintages of the grand vin, including 2016. My guests ended up buying a case of the 2016, and I picked up a bottle for myself. Paid substantially more than $30, but one expects a bit higher pricing at the property.

Second labels are usually a crapshoot. Glad this one worked out so well.
