2014 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (4/3/2017)
Stunning. Tasted today during the Grandi Langhe event in Neive. In a room full of Barbaresco wines from dozens of producers, showing many vintages (often to show a vertical context), this wine was in a category all its own. Electric was the word that kept repeating in my head, this is so fresh, so balanced. This may be my favorite new release classico in the past decade. It’s thrilling. Medium-bodied with great cut, the layers of red fruit come with plenty of citrus and pomegranate aromas and flavors. If you’re a fan of this house, I strongly suggest you consider multiple cases. May well end up being one of those wines that’s always going to be on point; a life of 20+ years should be no problem at all. A masterpiece. very highly recommended

What’s the story on 2014? I’ve heard washout in some places (Barolo?), but Barbaresco is ok?
2014 vintage Nebbiolo wines in Barbaresco area (consensus of more than 10 winegrowers I spoke with today) very good>excellent. More southerly parts of Langhe, not so much. But don’t tell anyone; lumping them together would be a great coup for consumers.
Phenomenal note, Tim. Thanks for the early report.
There were very bad hail storms in large swaths of the Barolo zone in July and again at the end of the summer, and a lot of rain across the summer. Barbaresco escaped the hail and rainfall was just 100mm versus 260mm in Barolo, so the vintage showed very differently in the two zones, even though they are very close.
In general, the storms affected nebbiolo less because it ripens much later than the other reds – typically October versus early September for dolcetto and late September for barbera.
Someone posted a few months ago that the Produttori will bottle the individual vineyards in 2014.
